A leading organisation delivering major water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the East of England are looking to appoint an experienced

Design Manager to strengthen their engineering team.

Based in the Peterborough area with hybrid working available, this is an excellent opportunity to take a senior role within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary engineering environment.

You will lead the design delivery of a diverse portfolio of water recycling and wastewater projects, overseeing multi-disciplinary engineering teams and driving innovative, sustainable solutions that improve treatment performance, reduce carbon and deliver long-term environmental benefits.

The role will suit an experienced engineering leader who enjoys working collaboratively, challenging traditional approaches and using digital technologies and continuous improvement to deliver better project outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering design delivery across a portfolio of water recycling and wastewater projects.
  • Develop and manage Engineering Project Plans covering scope, programme, cost, risk and resource requirements.
  • Lead and coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering teams across process, mechanical, electrical and civil disciplines.
  • Ensure high-quality, integrated design solutions are delivered in line with project requirements.
  • Work closely with suppliers, subcontractors and internal stakeholders to ensure effective design integration.
  • Drive affordability, value engineering and commercially viable design solutions.
  • Promote low-carbon and environmentally sustainable approaches throughout the design process.
  • Ensure designs comply with CDM regulations and relevant health, safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Champion a strong health and safety culture across the engineering function.
  • Lead, mentor and develop a high-performing engineering team.
  • Support innovation, standardisation and the adoption of new ways of working.
  • Promote the effective use of digital engineering technologies, including 3D modelling.
  • Work collaboratively with delivery, procurement, construction and other project functions to achieve successful project outcomes.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and help develop more efficient and effective engineering practices.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status or demonstrable progress towards Chartered status.
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams and delivering designs for major capital projects.
  • Strong understanding of CDM regulations and the responsibilities associated with design management.
  • Previous experience within the water, wastewater, utilities or wider infrastructure sector.
  • Strong understanding of engineering project delivery, including risk, programme, resources and affordability.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to motivate, develop and manage multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • A proactive approach to innovation, continuous improvement and new ways of working.
  • Genuine commitment to sustainability, carbon reduction and environmentally responsible engineering.
