Director of Data Management – UK-based Organisation

Permanent – Worcestershire, England – Hybrid (3 days in-office)

We are looking for an experienced Data Leader to join the Technology Senior Leadership Team of a leading organisation in the UK. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, this role will be responsible for defining and executing the company’s Data Strategy.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience delivering transformational change in data and analytics within a complex environment (B2C preferred, e.g., retail, consumer goods). They will take a logical and pragmatic approach to data transformation while providing leadership at all levels, up to and including C-suite.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute the organisation’s Data Strategy, ensuring high-quality data practices are maintained and evolved.
  • Implement the Data Strategy through a structured, transparent approach, setting clear milestones for progress.
  • Drive the adoption and refinement of modern data and analytics tools, practices, and capabilities, enabling digital innovation and operational improvements.
  • Oversee data migration services to support projects, programmes, and acquisitions, ensuring quality and timeliness.
  • Lead a team of 8-10 data professionals, focusing on recruitment, performance management, and development to meet business needs.
  • Manage relationships with external suppliers, ensuring cost-effective and efficient delivery of data and analytics solutions.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to align data initiatives with business objectives.
  • Establish and lead a Data and Analytics Community of Practice, empowering business units to develop their own solutions within a guided framework.
  • Plan and execute strategic projects and initiatives that align with the organisation’s long-term goals.
  • Beyond data strategy, play a key role in the organisation’s increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI).

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Strong experience in developing and positioning data strategy at the executive level.
  • Extensive experience leading organisation-wide data quality improvement and governance initiatives.
  • Previous leadership experience in managing technology teams within large, complex organisations (B2C experience preferred).
  • Proven ability to drive commercial outcomes through data strategy, ensuring scalable and adaptable technology solutions.
  • Expertise in delivering data and analytics solutions aligned with business needs.
  • Experience with enterprise-grade data and analytics platforms (SAP Data Sphere / SAC preferred but not essential).
  • Strong background in managing large-scale data projects and programmes, with formal project management accreditation being desirable.
  • Ability to conduct effective cost-benefit analysis to support strategic decisions.
  • Relevant degree, management qualification, or professional certification.
