Location: London

Type: Full-time, Permanent

I'm currently working with an employee-owned, multidisciplinary engineering consultancy that is looking to appoint an Associate or Associate Director into its public realm and urban highways design team in London.

This is a genuinely good opportunity for someone who wants to work on well-designed streetscape and public realm projects, with a consultancy that has a strong design culture, a sensible approach to work-life balance and a clear path for progression. The team delivers a mix of borough-led, TfL and developer-funded schemes across London and the wider UK.

The Role

The role sits within a wider transport planning and highways engineering group and focuses on the delivery of public realm, streetscape and urban highway improvement schemes. The level of responsibility will depend on experience, with Associate Directors taking more of a lead on client relationships, commercial matters and team leadership. Key elements of the role include:

  • Leading or managing public realm and urban highways design projects from early concept through to detailed design and construction
  • Acting as Project Manager or Project Director (level dependent), responsible for programmes, budgets and delivery
  • Providing technical and design input to ensure schemes work from both an engineering and placemaking perspective
  • Reviewing drawings, reports and technical submissions prior to issue
  • Supporting and mentoring engineers and technicians within the team
  • Working directly with local authorities, clients and key stakeholders
  • Contributing to bids, fee proposals and new work opportunities
  • Working closely with transport planners, urban designers and other disciplines across the business

About You

I'm looking to speak with highways or civil engineering professionals who have strong experience delivering public realm and urban highways projects, ideally within London or other complex urban environments. You should be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience delivering public realm or urban highways schemes for London boroughs, the City of London, Westminster or similar authorities
  • A good understanding of streetscape design, active travel infrastructure and inclusive street design
  • Familiarity with local authority approvals processes and stakeholder coordination
  • Experience with Section 278 and Section 38 highway works
  • Solid knowledge of relevant design standards, including Manual for Streets, DMRB and TfL guidance
  • Experience using AutoCAD and Civil 3D, with some exposure to BIM and 3D workflows
  • Experience leading projects and supporting teams, appropriate to your level
  • Confidence dealing directly with clients and external stakeholders
  • A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
  • Chartered, or working toward chartership

Why This Role?

This is a chance to work on high-quality public realm and streetscape projects that genuinely improve urban environments, within a consultancy that values collaboration and good design over hierarchy and red tape.

The package includes a competitive salary, flexible and hybrid working, and a solid benefits offering. There is clear scope to step up in responsibility over time, particularly for strong Associates looking to move toward Associate Director level.
