Our client, a leading infrastructure and utilities contractor, is seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join their growing commercial team. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially driven professional looking to take ownership of major projects while supporting the wider commercial function. Working closely with senior leadership and operational teams, you will play a pivotal role in driving profitability, managing contractual obligations, mitigating risk, and maximising commercial opportunities across a diverse project portfolio.
The Role
As a Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will take responsibility for the commercial performance of multiple projects, ensuring robust cost control, effective contract management, and successful value recovery throughout the project lifecycle. You will act as a key commercial advisor to operational teams, supporting strategic decision‑making while maintaining strong client and subcontractor relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor project expenditure against tender allowances and budget forecasts
- Manage value recovery and ensure commercial targets are achieved
- Identify, assess, and manage project changes, variations, and compensation events
- Maximise commercial opportunities while mitigating project risks
- Ensure contractual obligations and notice requirements are administered correctly
- Maintain accurate commercial records and supporting documentation
- Prepare and submit client applications for payment
- Track payments received and proactively manage outstanding debt recovery
- Review and understand project scopes and contractual requirements
- Price additional works, variations, and change requests
- Negotiate and agree final accounts with clients and subcontractors
- Produce accurate monthly commercial reports and forecasts
- Review contracts for commercial risk, onerous clauses, and unusual provisions
- Communicate contractual obligations and risks to operational delivery teams
- Manage and report on project pipelines and contract status
- Provide commercial guidance and support across the wider business
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, suppliers, and internal stakeholders
About You
We are looking for an experienced commercial professional with a proven track record of delivering strong financial performance within construction, infrastructure, utilities, or civil engineering environments.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Significant Quantity Surveying experience within a construction‑related sector
- Strong commercial and contractual management expertise
- Experience managing project costs, valuations, variations, and final accounts
- Excellent understanding of value recovery and change management processes
- Strong negotiation and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to analyse contracts and identify commercial risks and opportunities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong numerical and analytical abilities
- Advanced Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively
Desirable
- Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a related discipline
- Experience within utilities, infrastructure, civil engineering, or related sectors
- Strong understanding of NEC contracts
- Previous experience mentoring or supporting junior commercial team members
