Job Description

Design Manager – Fire Remediation / Recladding Projects

(Open to speaking to Assistant Design Managers/ Junior Design Managers too)

Location: North East London

Salary: Up to £85k basic for the right candidate

Freelance: We are also looking at freelance candidates paying up to £400/day

Hybrid: Office-based with 1 day working from home

An established Main Contractor is seeking a Freelance Design Manager to support a growing portfolio of recladding and fire remediation projects across London. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment and has strong technical and regulatory experience within the residential sector. We are also open to looking at Junior Design Managers/ Assistant Design Managers

The Role

You will be responsible for leading the design process from tender, PCSA stage through to delivery, typically managing around two to three projects at any given time. The role involves close coordination with consultants, subcontractors, and internal teams to ensure design compliance, timely approvals, and effective communication across all stages of the project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate design information from pre-construction through to delivery
  • Ensure compliance with Building Regulations and the Building Safety Act (Gateway 1–3)
  • Liaise with Building Control and manage relevant design submissions and approvals
  • Review and manage consultant appointments, scopes, and deliverables
  • Oversee and coordinate fire risk assessments and façade design information
  • Lead design reviews, resolve technical queries, and support site teams during construction
  • Maintain accurate design documentation and ensure alignment with project programmes

About You

  • Proven experience as a Design Manager within a Main Contractor (will consider an Assistant Design Manager/ Design Coordinator for this role too)
  • Strong understanding of fire remediation, recladding, and residential compliance
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Building Regulations submissions and Building Control processes
  • Excellent coordination and communication skills
  • Ability to work across multiple projects and deliver to tight deadlines
