Following the award of a significant new client, our client is looking to appoint an experienced Senior Lighting Impact & Planning Consultant to become the technical lead for a major national account while helping shape the future direction of its specialist Lighting Impact & Planning team. This is far more than a technical consultancy role. You'll combine technical excellence with client leadership, taking ownership of complex planning-stage lighting projects while helping develop a growing team and influencing the future of this important service area. The Opportunity

Working across a wide variety of residential, commercial, infrastructure and public realm developments, you'll deliver Lighting Impact Assessments, Lighting Strategies and planning-stage exterior lighting designs that balance safety, sustainability, biodiversity and planning compliance. You'll become the trusted technical advisor for a major national client, working alongside planners, architects, ecologists, landscape architects and multidisciplinary design teams to deliver practical, high-quality lighting solutions. You'll also play an important role in mentoring junior engineers, developing technical standards and contributing to the continued growth of the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of Lighting Impact Assessments, Lighting Strategies and planning-stage exterior lighting projects.
  • Act as the technical lead for a major strategic client.
  • Manage projects from initial enquiry through planning approval and technical delivery.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports supported by robust lighting calculations.
  • Undertake lighting modelling using Lighting Reality, Relux and/or AGi32.
  • Interpret planning policy, environmental guidance, ILP Guidance Notes and relevant British Standards.
  • Collaborate with planners, architects, ecologists, landscape architects and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Present technical recommendations confidently to clients and stakeholders.
  • Review technical work completed by junior team members.
  • Mentor graduates and junior consultants as the team continues to grow.
  • Support business development by identifying opportunities to add value for existing clients.
  • Contribute to the development of internal technical standards and best practice.

About You

We're looking for an experienced lighting professional who enjoys combining technical expertise with strong communication and relationship-building skills. You'll ideally have:

  • Five or more years' experience in exterior lighting design, lighting impact assessment or planning-stage lighting consultancy.
  • Proven experience producing Lighting Impact Assessments and Lighting Strategies.
  • Strong understanding of exterior lighting design principles.
  • Excellent knowledge of ILP Guidance Notes, BS 5489 and current environmental lighting guidance.
  • Experience using Lighting Reality, Relux and/or AGi32.
  • Good working knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Excellent technical report writing skills.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills.
  • The confidence to build trusted client relationships.
  • A collaborative approach with experience mentoring or supporting junior colleagues.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Membership of the Institution of Lighting Professionals (or working towards membership) would be advantageous.
