Alces Flight Ltd designs and develops innovative software for AI&HPC systems across the UK. We are advocates of open-source software and strongly believe in community-driven development. We have a broad customer base in multiple market sectors including academic/research institutions, finance, medical and Formula One.
We are investing to develop a new platform to expand our reach into Europe and the US and looking for a highly motivated Principal Software Developer to join our development team to help hack out the core of a new SaaS/IaaS platform from the ground up.

Key Responsibilities of the Principal Software Developer:
- Work directly with and alongside company directors, an existing product lead and our system architects to hack out a core product that fits our particular gap in the market.
- Research, design and implement new software programs
- Develop and integrate existing software programs and platforms
- Be hands-on with our uniquely agile design, implementation and testing methodologies
- You can expect full ownership and responsibility for end-to-end delivery of your projects
- You\’ll frequently be exposed to large-scale AI computer systems and supercomputers, as well as emerging technologies such as public and private IaaS
- We strive for small frequent deployments of our technologies
- We primarily work with Ruby on Rails but you can expect to use multiple technologies whenever something becomes more appropriate.

- You have a passion for all things software development
- Your interests/skills have particular emphasis on open-source software and Linux environments
- You love solving problems; you understand that to solve business problems you have to draw on your extensive variety of multi-discipline skills
- You are a polyglot programmer, able to work in multiple programming languages
- You understand how to prioritise; you know when to plan and when to take the plunge
- You have a great attitude towards learning new and developing existing skills
- You want to lead and mentor software developers of all skill levels

- You have a demonstrable open-source software background (e.g. GitHub account and projects, etc.)

- You have degree level education
- You can demonstrate experience in running engineering teams or cross functional teams
- You\’re comfortable with and have experience working closely with senior stakeholders and wider business goals outside of a development only mindset.
- You have experience in scripting languages such as Bash, Ruby, Python
- You know your TLAs from OOP, MVC, and SQL to TLS, TCP and VPN.
- You know when to use Infrastructure as Code and DevOps methodologies.
- You\’ve worked with cloud technologies such as AWS, OpenStack, Azure or Google Cloud
