Full job description

ABOUT ALBOTHERM

Albotherm is a Bristol-based materials company developing heat-activated materials to tackle the growing challenge of overheating across agriculture and the built environment.

Our technology responds automatically to changes in temperature, helping to manage solar heat when and where it's needed. We're using our technology to address overheating across agriculture and the built environment, from protecting crops and supporting a more resilient food system, to helping keep the buildings we live and work in comfortable as our climate gets warmer.

We're a small, ambitious team working to turn exciting materials science into products with real-world impact. As we grow, we want to build a company that people are proud to be part of, where everyone has a voice, good ideas are valued, and people are trusted to do great work while maintaining a healthy balance outside of it.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a driven and experienced Research Assistant (or similar) with a passion for formulation chemistry & quality control. The Research Assistant will play a key role in Albotherm's product optimisation and product development activities, through formulation testing, experiment design and QC. Responsibilities include carrying out routine and investigative quality control testing, maintaining accurate laboratory records, supporting scale-up and manufacturing processes, troubleshooting formulation and production issues, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. The role will also involve supporting the validation and commercialisation of new products, playing a key part in taking innovations from the R&D stage through product validation and into manufacture.

As a growing and agile business, this role offers significant variety and the opportunity to contribute across multiple areas of the company. Whilst formulation and quality control will be the primary focus, there will be times when an \"all hands on deck\" approach is needed to support wider business activities. We pride ourselves on being a supportive and collaborative team, where everyone works together to solve challenges, share ideas, and help each other succeed.

The ideal candidate will combine strong practical laboratory skills with a methodical approach to problem-solving, a keen attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment. This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to product innovation while ensuring the highest standards of quality and manufacturing excellence are maintained.

SKILLS

Required:

  • - A degree in Chemistry or a related discipline with 3-5 years of relevant experience, or 5-8 years of relevant industrial experience without a degree.

  • - Adaptable and comfortable with changing priorities, evolving processes and the varied responsibilities of a growing business.

  • - A collaborative team player, willing to support colleagues and contribute beyond their core responsibilities when needed.

  • - Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive working relationships internally and externally.

  • - Highly organised, with good attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities

The successful candidate must have the right to work in the UK by the start of their employment. Please note that Albotherm is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this role.

  • - Experience with emulsion chemistry.

  • - Experience working in the paint and coatings industry.

  • - Chemical manufacturing experience.

WHAT YOU'LL RECEIVE FROM ALBOTHERM

We want Albotherm to be a place where people can do meaningful, ambitious work and enjoy being part of the team that makes it happen. We care about creating a supportive working environment, giving people the flexibility and trust to do their best work, and making sure there's space for life outside of work too.

As part of the Albotherm team, you'll receive:

  • 25 days annual leave, plus UK bank holidays and your birthday off

  • Flexible working hours, with core hours of 10am-3pm

  • A competitive share options scheme, giving you the opportunity to share in Albotherm's future success

  • A health cash plan, including dental and other everyday healthcare costs

  • A supportive approach to health, wellbeing and time away from work when you need it

  • Support for professional development and training

  • Cycle to Work scheme

  • Regular team socials

This is a great opportunity for a Research Assistant who has a passion for turning scientific research outputs into commercial products. We are looking for someone who thrives in a collaborative and dynamic environment and is eager to contribute to an innovative and growing company. If this sounds like you, please send a CV and cover letter via the Indeed portal.

We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities, and are dedicated to ensuring a fair and accessible recruitment process. If you need any adjustments or support, please let us know, and we will be happy to accommodate you.

Hiring process:

We have a two-stage hiring process consisting of one 30-minute online interview and one in-person interview. These will cover both technical competencies and interpersonal skills.

Interviews will be conducted throughout November on an application-by-application basis.
