Reports To: Senior Commissioning Engineer / Commissioning Manager
Location: Site-based throughout the UK (with travel and occasional overnight stays)
Job Purpose: To assist in the commissioning, testing, fault-finding, and optimisation of Building Management Systems (BMS) across commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, and public sector buildings. The trainee will work alongside experienced engineers to develop technical knowledge and practical skills in BMS controls, HVAC systems, and energy management.
Key Responsibilities
- Commissioning Support: Assist with the commissioning of BMS control systems on new and existing installations. Support senior engineers in testing control strategies and sequences of operation. Verify correct operation of field devices including sensors, actuators, valves, dampers, and meters. Carry out point-to-point checks and I/O testing. Assist with system modifications and software downloads. Record commissioning results and complete site documentation.
- Fault Finding & Maintenance: Assist with diagnosing and resolving BMS-related faults. Support service engineers during reactive maintenance visits. Identify issues with controls, communications, and HVAC equipment. Escalate complex technical issues to senior engineers.
- Documentation & Reporting: Complete commissioning sheets and test records. Update site reports and progress documentation. Assist in producing as-fitted records and commissioning certificates. Maintain accurate records of site activities and findings.
- Health, Safety & Compliance: Comply with company Health & Safety policies and site rules. Attend site inductions and toolbox talks. Ensure safe working practices at all times. Wear appropriate PPE and report any hazards immediately.
- Training & Development: Attend internal and external training courses. Develop knowledge of BMS platforms, HVAC systems, and control principles. Work towards becoming an independent Commissioning Engineer. Keep up to date with industry standards and emerging technologies.
Requirements
- Essential: Good understanding of basic electrical principles. Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to read technical drawings and schematics. Good communication skills. Basic IT skills including Microsoft Office. Full UK driving licence. Willingness to travel and work on customer sites.
- Desirable: Qualification in Electrical Engineering, Building Services, Controls, or a related discipline. Knowledge of HVAC systems. Understanding of control systems and networking. Previous experience in electrical, controls, or building services environments. ECS/CSCS card.
