Scientific Director β Medical Communications
Fully remote UK with occasional travel for client meetings, conferences and events
A specialist, independent medical communications agency is entering an exciting period of growth and is looking to appoint a Scientific Director to join its senior Medical & Scientific team.
This is a senior strategic role for an experienced medical communications professional who can combine scientific expertise, client leadership, commercial thinking and people development.
The Opportunity
As Scientific Director, you will play a key role in shaping the scientific and strategic direction of a portfolio of accounts. You will work closely with senior Client Services colleagues to develop integrated medical communications and medical affairs programmes, acting as a trusted scientific adviser to clients and external experts.
This is an opportunity to move beyond purely delivery-focused work and take genuine ownership of strategy, client relationships, new business and team development within a growing independent agency.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the scientific and strategic direction of key client accounts and programmes
- Develop and oversee scientific communication, publication and medical education strategies
- Act as a senior scientific adviser to clients, providing proactive recommendations based on data, evidence and the wider therapeutic landscape
- Lead senior client meetings, advisory boards, symposia and strategic planning sessions
- Work closely with Client Services to ensure scientific strategy, account strategy and commercial objectives are aligned
- Provide scientific leadership across a broad range of medical affairs and communications programmes
- Maintain oversight of scientific quality, accuracy, compliance and strategic relevance across deliverables
- Identify opportunities for organic account growth and contribute significantly to new business development
- Lead or support pitches and proposals, shaping the scientific narrative and presenting to prospective clients
- Develop project scopes, budgets and resource requirements in partnership with Client Services and Finance
- Build and maintain strong relationships with senior clients, KOLs and external stakeholders
- Mentor and develop scientific team members, supporting career progression and raising scientific standards across the agency
- Contribute to the wider strategic direction, culture and continued growth of the business
About You
- A degree in medicine, biomedical science or a related discipline; PhD/MD preferred
- Significant experience within a medical communications agency
- Strong experience across medical affairs and/or scientific communications
- Proven ability to develop and lead scientific strategy rather than simply execute individual deliverables
- Experience managing senior client relationships and leading strategic discussions
- Experience contributing to pitches, proposals and business development
- Strong commercial awareness, including understanding of scopes, budgets and resourcing
- Excellent understanding of relevant industry codes, including ABPI, EFPIA and GPP
- Experience mentoring, coaching or managing scientific/medical writing teams
- Excellent communication skills and the credibility to engage confidently with senior clients and scientific experts
