About Us

akt is the UK’s national LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity. Founded in 1989, we operate service centres in London, Manchester and Newcastle and provide support across the UK through our Digital Service. Last year, akt worked with over 1150 vulnerable young people. We exist because of a simple but powerful thought that no young person should have to choose between a safe home and being who they are. Today, young LGBTQ+ people are still at an increased risk of homelessness and are twice as likely to end up hidden homeless than their peers. akt provides support and routes to safe homes so that young people can thrive.

The Team

This role sits within akt’s London service centres as part of the London Service team and is supervised by the Director of Services. Other members of the team include London Services Manager, Senior Caseworkers and caseworkers.

Job Summary

  • To carry out holistic assessments of the needs of young LGBTQ+ people who are homeless, vulnerably housed, or in a hostile environment, and to carry out short term intervention where appropriate on their behalf.
  • Maintain up to date records of young people accessing support on our CRM system.
  • Contribute to and maintain resources and signposting routes to enable young people to engage with appropriate services.
  • Actively work within a team and support each other with cases and solutions.
  • Find accommodation options and housing solutions for young people, being creative in sourcing new accommodation routes and building relationships with accommodation providers in cooperation with the services team.
  • Support appointments with young LGBTQ+ people when needed including providing advocacy with statutory services i.e. Local Authorities.
  • Support with the pilot of a mentoring scheme for young people.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safeguarding and maintain professional boundaries in day-to-day practice, ensuring adherence to relevant policies, procedures, and frameworks to promote safe and ethical service delivery.
