Our client is seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to lead and shape the AI strategy within their growing AI and Data Engineering division. This pivotal role requires a proven track record of delivering AI and data-driven solutions to market, coupled with strong leadership skills and the ability to manage a team of 20+ experts.

With over 10 years of experience in AI, data science, and machine learning, the successful candidate will have a deep understanding of AI engineering principles, MLOps practices, and software development lifecycles. They will also possess extensive experience working within the defence sector or defence consultancy, with the ability to obtain or maintain high-level security clearance.

Role Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the AI strategy, ensuring alignment with business goals and defence industry requirements.
  • Oversee the design, development, and deployment of AI solutions with a focus on security, robustness, and scalability.
  • Act as a thought leader, representing the organisation’s AI capabilities internally and externally within the defence sector.
  • Establish best practices for AI ethics, governance, and compliance to ensure regulatory adherence.
  • Lead the end-to-end lifecycle of AI product development, from concept and feasibility to deployment and in-service support.
  • Develop and maintain governance frameworks for AI models and algorithms, ensuring quality, transparency, and integrity.

  • Manage and mentor a team of 20+ AI and Data Engineering professionals, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Develop capability improvement plans for AI engineering and ensure that the team remains at the forefront of emerging AI technologies.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including R&D, engineering, and product teams, to deliver integrated AI solutions.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in AI, data science, or machine learning, with hands-on expertise in AI and data engineering.
  • Extensive experience working in the defence sector or defence consultancy, with knowledge of security requirements and regulatory standards.
  • Strong background in AI model development, MLOps, and deployment of AI solutions in complex environments.
  • Proficiency in data analytics, data architecture, and governance principles.
  • Proven track record of managing and developing high-performing teams within a technical environment.
  • Expertise in software development lifecycles, including requirements gathering, quality assurance, and issue management.
  • Strong stakeholder management and project delivery skills, with experience working in client-facing roles.
  • A degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, or a related discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience in AI engineering.
