Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of practitioners providing surgical care to patients. They work under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) and a surgeon to facilitate surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and patient safety is maintained.
Responsibilities Handle instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgical procedures.
Maintain the sterile field, prepare operating rooms, and assist with patient positioning as needed.
Inspect sterile items for contamination before opening; maintain sterility while scrubbed and preserve sterility of instruments and supplies.
Perform accurate instrument, sponge, and needle counts following established policies and procedures.
Function independently in the scrub role and as a circulator under the supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse.
May require on‐call duties and rotating shifts.
