Overview
The Quality Project Specialist assists in the management and coordination of the quality program for the Laboratory Service in concert with the Laboratory Directors, Supervisors and the Manager. The Quality Project Specialist has general knowledge of all laboratory areas, expertise and leadership in laboratory medicine and extensive knowledge of quality standards and regulatory guidelines. This position requires the exercise of independent judgement and responsibility. Other critical aspects include project management, data analysis and management, facilitation of the laboratory safety team and other process improvement teams (PIT), and QM education for staff. The Quality Project Specialist assists with the development and updating of the laboratory service-wide goals, objectives and accomplishments and prepares the departments for regulatory review.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversight of quality improvement activities within the Laboratory Service.
- Leads teams and works on projects to improve clinical quality and administrative functions within the service.
- Investigates complaints and nonconformities for laboratory service in concert with departmental leadership.
- Develops action plans to resolve issues and identify audits that ensure improvements are sustained.
- Shares responsibility for the regulatory oversight of the service.
- Ensures laboratory license renewals, adherence to regulatory standards in regard to the main lab, and point of care testing.
- Participates in all laboratory regulatory surveys, locates documents needed from the medical record, and takes notes of survey activities.
- Responds to survey findings and other correspondence accurately and timely.
- Performs appropriate maintenance of quality assurance procedures, policies, and pertinent manuals.
- Interprets laboratory information for healthcare providers.
- Effectively communicates implications and/or applications of test methodologies.
- Assists clinicians in evaluating unexpectedly abnormal test results.
- Reviews reports and statistics prepared by laboratory departmental leadership to aid in development of quality and improvement opportunities within their departments.
- Prepares and performs audit activities to ensure the laboratory service maintains compliance with all pertinent regulatory requirements.
- Assists with business planning as well as the preparation of the capital and operational budgets for the service.
- Tracks all projects to completion.
Education, Licensure, Registration and/or Certification
A Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemical, physical, or biological science is required, and education must come from an accredited college or university. Candidates with a BS must have at least six years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience OR candidates with an appropriate master’s degree must have at least four years of pertinent laboratory experience with at least two years within the designated laboratory specialty AND management experience preferred.
