Control & Protection Verification and Validation Engineer
This role supports the design and implementation of HVDC Control and Protection Systems by analysing customer requirements, assessing deviations from standard solutions, modelling the proposed system, and providing requirements for hardware and software teams to implement and validate the resulting system.
Responsibilities
- Design and create test specifications against software requirements.
- Perform gap analysis between standard/design requirements and customer technical requirements, defining test requirements.
- Understand project milestones and ensure testing activities are correctly provisioned.
- Communicate failure details to the respective engineering functions.
- Develop RSCAD models and conduct associated studies.
- Define control system requirements for the RTDS lab setup, including AC/DC interface, plant emulator interface, and RSCAD power system network conversion, modelling and verification.
- Provide problem‑solving support for lab setup and debugging, identifying and managing technical risks.
- Support testing of New Product Introduction (NPI) and product care teams, develop existing and new products and tools.
- Conduct dynamic performance studies using offline and online simulation tools.
- Assist Validation Engineers in executing tests and reporting results.
- Review and analyze test results.
- Provide support to Commissioning Engineers during dynamic commissioning at site.
- Drive continual improvement, introducing tools, methods and process improvements and coordinating with Continuous Improvement leaders.
- Adopt a standard product methodology mindset, seeking opportunities to reuse solutions, improve quality and reliability while reducing delivery timelines and costs.
Qualifications / Essential Requirements
- Engineering degree or equivalent with a focus on power systems and power electronics, or proven equivalent knowledge and experience in HVDC.
- Completed vocational training, preferably with experience as a Verification Engineer in High Voltage or as a Control & Protection design Engineer.
- Strong knowledge of 400kV substation, HVDC systems (LCC/VSC/SVC) including control and protection systems.
- Experience developing and working with RSCAD models.
- Understanding of overall HVDC system operational behaviour.
- Excellent communication skills and fluency in English.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word and Excel; knowledge of Microsoft Project is a plus.
- Knowledge of fault recorder (TFR) systems preferred.
- Experience with MATCAD, PSCAD, PSS/E, MATLAB SIMULINK, EMTP‑RV, Digsilent and similar tools is an advantage.
- Familiarity with applicable electrical standards such as IEC 61850, IEC 62351, IEC 12207, IEEE 15288, IEC 25010, IEC 27032, NERC/CIP is an added advantage.
