The North and South Europe Grid System Integration (GSI) team is seeking a Senior Protection Settings Engineer to work on protection settings studies for relays in high‑voltage AC transmission systems, supporting both on‑shore and offshore windfarm connections, battery storage, and green hydrogen projects.
Responsibilities
- Prepare high‑voltage protection settings calculations, including low‑impedance feeder differential and distance protections, transformer‑biased differential protections, low‑ and high‑impedance busbar protection calculations, and circulating‑current studies.
- Perform short‑circuit fault level calculations manually to IEC60909 standards for symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults using sequence components.
- Use power system analysis software (e.g., DIgSILENT PowerFactory) for fault‑level studies and protection grading/selectivity reports.
- Conduct arc‑flash analysis with tools such as Alpi Caneco BT for LVAC 400V systems.
- Prepare first‑time energisation circuit‑switching programs and automatic reclosure switching sequence reports.
- Technically analyze employer requirements to define and optimise protection functionality selection.
- Provide advisory support to project and tendering teams on protection‑related matters.
- Apply judgment to propose alternative solutions outside established parameters with guidance.
- Collaborate across internal teams to achieve project outcomes.
- Participate actively in business improvement initiatives within the engineering department.
- Offer support and mentorship to junior engineers to develop their professional competencies.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Design experience within the electrical transmission and distribution industry.
- Solid understanding of protection device and scheme principles of operation.
- Experience using power‑system analysis and modelling software, and arc‑flash analysis software (preferred).
- Fluent oral and written English.
- Strong problem‑analysis and resolution skills.
- Ability to plan and execute to very tight delivery schedules.
- Preferable minimum of 7 years’ experience in AC substation engineering.
- National Grid Settings Authorization certification or active pursuit of this certification.
- Industrial experience in AC substation design and primary plant, with understanding of protection, control/SCADA, OT cybersecurity, telecom, metering, CT/VT specifications, and substation integration.
