We are currently seeking a highly motivated Senior Façade Designer to lead the delivery of engineering design projects from initial concept through to practical completion. The role involves working across a wide range of sectors, including commercial, healthcare, retail, industrial, education, hospitality, leisure, and other specialist environments, offering the opportunity to take ownership of complex and high-profile schemes.
Responsibilities
- Lead medium-scale projects.
- Investigate solutions, explore options, and communicate design solutions independently.
- Interpret the client brief and prepare designs at all stages from scheme to detail.
- Attend Design Team meetings with clients, collaborators, and communicate ideas through sketches, models, and presentations.
- Produce concept sketches, detailed designs, calculations, and reports in accordance with project programmes.
- Liaise with other disciplines, ensuring coordination of design and detailing work appropriate to the project.
- Review and evaluate design deliverables to advise on compliance with specifications and industry guidance/standards.
- Coordinate with project teams to resolve project-related issues and ensure deliverables are met.
- Maintain internal document control of drawings.
- Produce and edit specifications to clarify the technical requirements of the design.
- Review facade contractor’s tender returns and design submissions.
- Witness testing of facade systems.
- Undertake factory visits and site inspections.
- Respond to client requests for information.
- Facilitate and organise meetings and CPD training events for personal and team development, where appropriate.
Required Skills
- Experience leading projects through RIBA Design Stages and Construction.
- Proficiency in communicating ideas to architects, clients, and contractors in meetings.
- Sketching ability to develop concepts using hand sketches.
- Competence in 2D and 3D CAD software.
- Understanding of building physics principles governing thermal performance, condensation risk, etc., and their application in facade design.
- Familiarity with materials, systems, and installation techniques.
- Report writing skills with clear text and suitable images.
- Ability to adapt to design changes and budget constraints.
Qualifications and Experience
- Relevant degree (Facade Engineering, Architecture, Building Engineering, Structural Engineering, etc.) and preferably a postgraduate degree.
- Significant relevant experience in a similar role.
- Working knowledge of BS/EN and international standards.
- Comprehensive understanding of the engineering aspects of facade design and construction.
- Strong written, verbal, and sketching communication skills.
- A collaborative approach.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
