Location: Bristol with weekly site visits to Templecombe – Full Time – Hybrid

Reporting to: Practice Lead

Scope

Design, develop, modify and support electronic hardware systems used in underwater communication and sensor platforms, with a focus on obsolescence management, redesign and lifecycle support within a regulated, safety-critical environment.

Role

The Electronics Hardware Engineer will support obsolescence-driven redesign and sustainment activities across underwater systems and communication platforms. The role involves redesigning electronic hardware while maintaining form, fit and function, supporting integration, testing, manufacturing and in-service activities across the full product lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Lead obsolescence redesign activities for legacy and in-service electronic systems
  • Identify and replace obsolete components while maintaining form, fit and function
  • Design and modify digital and mixed-signal PCB schematics
  • Integrate microcontrollers, processors, FPGAs, power supplies, RF interfaces and communication modules
  • Support hardware enhancements, system integration and signal integrity activities
  • Collaborate with firmware, systems, mechanical, manufacturing and supplier teams
  • Execute hardware testing, validation, troubleshooting and integration activities
  • Produce technical documentation and support design reviews and ECR/ECN processes
  • Work within PLM systems such as Windchill
  • Support manufacturing, prototyping, qualification, production and in-service lifecycle activities
  • Ensure designs comply with DFM/DFT and regulated engineering standards

Required Experience

  • Experience in electronic hardware design, redesign and obsolescence management
  • Background supporting legacy or safety-critical electronic systems
  • PCB schematic design experience for digital and mixed-signal hardware
  • Experience replacing obsolete components while maintaining system compatibility and performance
  • Experience across the full hardware product lifecycle
  • Background in hardware integration, testing, validation and troubleshooting
  • Experience working with manufacturing, suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Familiarity with configuration management and engineering change processes

Required Skills

  • Electronic hardware and PCB schematic design
  • Obsolescence management and component replacement
  • Knowledge of microcontrollers, processors, FPGAs, RF interfaces and power supplies
  • Signal integrity, debugging and root cause analysis
  • Hardware testing and use of laboratory equipment
  • Technical documentation and reporting
  • Understanding of DFM/DFT principles
  • Familiarity with ECR/ECN processes and PLM systems such as Windchill
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills
