Ready to lead a high-performing 5-axis machining team while staying hands-on with complex CNC manufacturing? We are supporting an established precision engineering business looking for a 5-Axis Milling Team Leader to take technical and day-to-day leadership of their milling team. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will help develop the team, improve machining processes, and ensure the department consistently delivers high-quality components efficiently and safely.

Why Join?

  • Lead and develop a skilled team while remaining hands-on with advanced CNC machining.
  • Shape how the milling department operates, driving improvements in productivity, quality, and processes.
  • Work on complex precision-machined components using advanced 5-axis equipment.
  • Have a direct influence on tooling, programming, machining methods, and technical standards.
  • Play a key role in developing the department and supporting wider business objectives.

The Role

As the 5-Axis Milling Team Leader, you will provide technical leadership across the milling department, supporting machinists with setup, programming, troubleshooting, and process improvement. You will also take ownership of team development, training plans, and performance, working closely with the Workshop Manager to ensure production targets are achieved.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and develop the milling team, owning training plans, skills matrices, mentoring, and day-to-day support.
  • Improve productivity and process stability by reducing downtime and optimizing machining methods and tooling.
  • Drive continuous improvement across milling processes, programming, tooling, and production methods.
  • Support CNC setup, programming, and troubleshooting across 5-axis machining when required.
  • Use your experience with FANUC, Heidenhain, and Mazak controls to support technical problem-solving.
  • Investigate machining issues through root cause analysis and implement effective solutions.
  • Ensure components meet required quality standards through inspection, technical drawing, and GD&T interpretation.
  • Support quotations by assessing machining feasibility, capacity, tooling, and process requirements.
  • Work closely with Planning, Quality, Engineering, and other departments to keep production running effectively.
  • Support the Workshop Manager with team management, including absence management and 1:1s.
  • Maintain a strong culture of safety, quality, consistency, and continuous improvement.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong hands-on background in CNC milling, ideally including significant 5-axis experience.
  • Experience setting and operating CNC machinery, with the ability to step in and support production when needed.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or developing a machining team.
  • Competence with FANUC, Heidenhain, and/or Mazak controls.
  • Good understanding of CNC programming and CAM troubleshooting.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings, including GD&T.
  • Experience using a range of precision measuring and inspection equipment.
  • A practical, hands-on approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to get the best from a team.

If you’re an experienced CNC machinist or senior setter/operator ready to step into a technical leadership role while staying close to the machining, we’d love to hear from you. Apply today for a confidential discussion.
