Adult Skills Tutor (Early Years & Childcare)

Function Accountability: Teaching, learning and assessment

The Adult Skills Tutor is responsible for the high-quality delivery of adult learning and vocational training programmes through a blend of face-to-face and remote delivery methods.

The role will engage, motivate and support learners throughout their learning journey, ensuring positive learner outcomes, achievement and progression into employment.

The tutor will deliver engaging and inclusive learning experiences that meet curriculum requirements, contractual outcomes and organisational quality standards.

Current delivery requirements include Early Years and Childcare programmes; however, the tutor may be required to support delivery across a range of adult skills and employability provision.

  • Support learners to overcome barriers to learning and achieve their goals.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of curriculum delivery and learner experience.
  • Ensure compliance with funding, quality and safeguarding requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging, interactive and inclusive teaching sessions in line with curriculum plans through a blend of face-to-face, virtual and online delivery.
  • Adapt teaching methods and learning resources to meet individual learner needs and promote learner engagement.
  • Conduct regular learner reviews, monitoring attendance, progress and achievement against agreed targets.
  • Assess learner work and provide timely, constructive feedback to support progression and achievement.
  • Monitor and report learner attendance, retention and performance accurately.
  • Embed digital skills, employability skills, English and maths development within delivery where appropriate.
  • Maintain a positive and supportive learning environment that promotes learner wellbeing and achievement.

Learner Support

  • Utilise initial assessment outcomes to identify learner starting points and support requirements.
  • Develop and implement individual learning and support strategies where required.
  • Identify and respond to barriers to learning and signpost learners to appropriate support services.
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion within all aspects of programme delivery.
  • Support learners to develop confidence, resilience and work‑ready behaviours.

Performance & Quality

  • Contribute to the achievement of programme performance measures including attendance, retention, achievement and progression outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date learner records, registers, reviews and associated documentation.
  • Support internal quality assurance processes including observations, standardisation and moderation activities.
  • Participate in curriculum development and continuous improvement activities.
  • Ensure compliance with awarding organisation, funding body and organisational requirements.

Learner Progression & Employability

  • Support learners to identify and achieve their employment and career goals.
  • Promote progression opportunities relevant to programme delivery and learner aspirations.
  • Work collaboratively with employers and partners to support positive learner destination outcomes.
  • Encourage learners to develop industry knowledge, employability skills and professional behaviours.

Safeguarding and Compliance

  • Always promote and safeguard the welfare of learners.
  • Comply with organisational policies relating to Safeguarding, Prevent, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Health & Safety and Data Protection.
  • Report safeguarding concerns in line with organisational procedures.
  • Maintain professional standards and undertake continuous professional development.

Essential/Desirable Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Recognised teaching qualification (PTLLS, AET, or equivalent).
  • Assessing qualification (TAQA or equivalent).
  • Experience delivering childcare or early years qualifications.
  • Experience delivering adult learning, vocational training, employability or funded programmes.
  • Experience delivering both face‑to‑face and online learning.
  • Strong classroom management and learner engagement skills.
  • Ability to motivate and support learners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience monitoring learner progress, conducting reviews and maintaining learner records.
  • Excellent organisational, communication, and digital skills.
  • Commitment to safeguarding, Prevent, and promoting equality and diversity.
  • Experience supporting learners with SEND.
  • Business management or start‑up experience.
  • Experience supporting learners with English and maths development.
  • Knowledge of business start‑up/self‑employment pathways in childcare.
  • GCSE English (Grade C/4 or equivalent) or experience supporting English development.
  • Information, Advice and Guidance L3.
