The Transport Manager is required to lead and manage the day-to-day operations of our home delivery network across the North of England. The role will be responsible for ensuring the efficient, safe and cost-effective management of transport activities, maintaining high service quality, and driving continuous improvements across the network. This is a key leadership role requiring strong operational expertise, people management skills, and a good understanding of home delivery logistics.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Operational Management: Lead and manage daily transport operations for the North of England and Scotland. Oversee scheduling, route planning, fleet utilisation, and subcontractor performance. Ensure on-time delivery, service quality, and compliance with KPIs and SLAs.
- People & Performance Leadership: Manage, coach, and develop transport team members and regional transport leads. Ensure all drivers, subcontractors, and logistics partners operate to the highest standards. Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure full compliance with UK and EU road transport legislation, including driver hours, vehicle safety, and environmental standards. Maintain and enforce health & safety policies, ensuring risk assessments and incident investigations are completed. CPC responsibility to ensure full compliance in line with statutory requirement. Defect management of vehicles and fleet in general ensuring defects are closed and standard processes are in place across all sites.
- Cost & Efficiency Management: Accountability for achieving transport budgets, optimising costs, and delivering productivity improvements. Identify and implement efficiency gains in fleet management, routing, and subcontractor partnerships. Support sustainability goals, including COâ‚‚ reduction initiatives.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Act as the key point of contact for internal stakeholders (customer service, planning, warehouse, senior management). Manage relationships with third-party carriers and delivery partners. Analyse transport performance and deliver data-driven improvements. Lead or support transport-related projects, such as new technology implementation, route optimisation tools, and process automation. Drive best practice sharing across the network.
Qualifications & Experience
- Proven experience in transport / logistics management, ideally within home delivery.
- Strong knowledge of UK road transport regulations, compliance, and health & safety standards.
- Demonstrated ability to manage transport budgets and deliver cost savings.
- Excellent leadership and people management skills, with experience managing both direct teams and third-party providers.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in transport planning systems (e.g., TMS, route optimisation tools).
