About us
The Airbus Engineering Degree Apprenticeship gives you the “university experience” with 3 whole years of invaluable industry experience. Achieve a BEng (Hons) Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering from Swansea University whilst earning a full-time salary and paying ZERO fees to do so.
This unique 40 month programme not only offers you a degree from one of the most highly-recognised engineering institutes in the country, but together with vocational training and placements in design, manufacturing and quality engineering, you will develop excellent engineering skills recognised across the globe.
You will be studying towards your degree at Coleg Cambria, which is accredited by our university partner Swansea University, and will have a unique opportunity to couple this learning with practical, industry-based work that will take place at our world leading aircraft manufacturing site in Broughton, (near Chester) North Wales.
You will also have the opportunity to work towards your professional accreditation with Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status which will set you up for a fantastic engineering career.
What you will be doing
During years 2 & 3 your scheme will operate with 4 days a week in placements and 1 day a week on academic leave for your degree. On your placement days you will be working on-site at our Wing Manufacturing Centre of Excellence where you’ll work within a range of different teams. The engineering disciplines you will cover include:
- Design Engineering
- Manufacturing Engineering
- Quality Engineering
Additionally you will gain vital experience working with other support functions such as finance, supply‑chain, procurement, logistics and enablement. You will rotate throughout these 3 disciplines approximately every 12 weeks.
Some of the work you could be doing includes:
Design Engineering
- Performing design changes to improve Design for Manufacturing of our products, making it more efficient to manufacture and supporting Airbus to deliver for our customers;
- Supporting the analysis activities within the wing structures team on Static Stress, Fatigue and Damage Tolerance analysis utilising hand‑calculations & Finite Element Analysis;
- Designing and analysing proposed solutions to support wing production as daily production support and project based activities.
Manufacturing Engineering
- Work as a lineside engineer to support build issues with the assembly process, tooling and other industrial aspects;
- Work on future architecture and industrial development projects to improve the way we manufacture the wings of today and tomorrow;
- Develop new tooling and technologies (e.g. robotics, automation and 3D printing) to improve wing‑build by reducing cost, reducing time, and improving efficiency.
Quality Engineering
- Work lineside to ensure the quality of the product during build. Raise issues and manage multi‑functional teams to resolve problems and improve the product quality;
- Work on aircraft modifications and future projects to develop quality control;
- Work within the testing and laboratory facilities to develop materials and processes of the future.
Requirements
In order to be eligible to this apprenticeship, you must have a minimum of:
- 112 UCAS points, made up of A-Level Grade B minimum in Maths, and Grade C minimum in Physics or Chemistry, with a further A-Level/AS-Level/BTEC Diploma;
- BTEC L3 Extended Diploma in Engineering or Aeronautical Engineering with a minimum grade Distinction (D or DDD) which must include a Distinction in Further Mathematics;
- Access to HE – Minimum 30 Level 3 credits, with 15 in Maths and 15 in a Science or Technology subject;
- Baccalaureate IB – Minimum H5 grade in Mathematics, and a minimum H3 grade in Physics;
- T Level – Minimum of Merit overall in Engineering & Manufacturing with an additional Level 3 qualification in Mathematics at B or above;
- Minimum Grade 4/C English Language & 5/B or above in Maths GCSE’s.
Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:
