We are a leading UK-based chemical distribution company, supplying a wide portfolio of industrial and specialty chemicals across diverse industries. Compliance, safety, and regulatory excellence are central to our operations. We are now seeking an experienced Customs and Excise Specialist to strengthen our Customs & Excise function and ensure adherence to UK and international trade regulations.
As a Customs and Excise Co-ordinator, you are responsible for supporting the day-to-day management of customs and excise activities at depot level, ensuring compliance with UK and international regulations. This includes managing controlled goods, completing accurate HMRC submissions, maintaining customs and excise master data in the ERP system, and providing support to the sales and warehouse teams. You will also support audit readiness and contribute to wider customs and excise projects across the business.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and submit customs and excise documentation to HMRC and/or hauliers, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Distribute customs and excise documents to internal and external stakeholders within the supply chain.
- Support goods-in/goods-out procedures and ensure processes comply with customs and excise controls.
- Monitor and manage warehouse movements of controlled goods, including tracking, reconciliation, and submission of regular HMRC returns.
- Maintain a register of customer authorisations and licences; apply and lift ERP system sales blocks based on their validity.
- Reconcile depot stock of controlled goods to declared movements and support monthly/quarterly excise submissions.
- Provide internal advice on the handling, storage, and sale of controlled or excisable goods.
- Maintain product master data in the ERP system, including commodity codes, product origin, excise classification, and any restrictions.
- Collate and archive documentation for audits, including movement records and compliance checks.
- Support depot audits and contribute to improving excise compliance performance locally.
- Participate in customs and excise projects and system/process improvement initiatives.
- Previous experience in a custom, logistics, supply chain, or regulatory role is preferred.
- Knowledge of UK import/export regulations and HMRC customs processes is desirable.
- Experience working with duty suspended excise goods or in warehouse controlled environments is a plus.
- Excellent attention to detail and high standards of record-keeping and documentation.
- Confident communicator with the ability to work effectively across departments.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Excel); ERP experience (e.g. SAP) is beneficial.
- Self-motivated and capable of working both independently and collaboratively.
