What you will be doing

As a Craft Surface Finish Fitting apprentice you’ll spend the first year preparing for surface finishes and completing foundational skills in preparation and application of surface finishes. You will also undertake mechanical fitting activities during the study period.

This 36-month apprenticeship is designed to maximise learning and impact:

Year One

You will study at Rhyl College and work towards:

  • NVQ Level 2 diploma in Performing Engineering Operations
  • Level 2 Academic Qualification
  • Level 2 Essential Skills

This year builds the foundation for contributing in year two.

Year Two and Three

Based at Airbus Broughton in North Wales, you will apply skills to live aircraft projects and assist in the preparation and painting of the wings for Single Aisle and Wide Body families. Tasks include:

  • Preparation & Setup: cleaning, sanding, masking, mixing paints and preparing spray equipment
  • Application & Quality: applying coats, monitoring environmental conditions, inspecting finishes, making adjustments and touch-ups, with safety and equipment maintenance
  • Fitting Activities: placement in wingbox production areas to drill and install fasteners

Academic study continues on day release toward:

  • Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma (Aeronautical Engineering)
  • Level 3 Academic Certificate

On successful completion, you will become a skilled Surface Finish Fitter specializing in preparation and application of surface finishes and the ability to drill-off and assemble metallic and composite components for the wing box. You will receive a Modern Apprenticeship Certificate.

Requirements

To be eligible, you must:

  • Achieve a minimum of five GCSEs including Maths (Grade C/4) and English Language (Grade C/4)
  • Grade CC/44 in Double Award Science or Grade C/4 in Single Award in Physics
  • Plus two other GCSEs at grade C/4 (or equivalent or higher)
