We are looking for a Facilities Mechanical Engineer to join the Facilities Management & Real Estate (FMRE) team, covering the Airbus estates primarily at Filton and Newport. This role involves driving the strategic direction, investment planning, and operational delivery for critical site infrastructure. A core element of this position is providing robust technical oversight, guidance, and driving high-performance delivery from our outsourced facilities management partners, while supporting the in-house team with technical problem-solving.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE TEAM

  • Contract & Subcontractor Delivery: Drive operational excellence and accountability from our outsourced partners. Identify, agree, and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Infrastructure & Asset Strategy: Define and execute short- and long-term strategies, investment plans, and operational delivery for critical site assets including HVAC/temperature control, internal/external surface & foul water systems, roller/final exit doors, and passenger/goods lifts.
  • BMS Operational Interface: Act as the primary operational user and core focal point for the Building Management System (BMS) to monitor and manage plant operation.
  • Statutory Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR) Written Schemes and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspections are kept up to date via statutory inspection service providers. Oversee fire suppression, gas systems, breathing air, and compressed air compliance. Serve as the site interface for company auditors, insurers, and external authorities regarding Permits to Work (e.g., Confined Spaces) and Control of Impairment Notices.
  • Project Support & Tendering: Support engineering projects from initial request to final handover. Provide precise specification requirements into tender documentation to ensure all installations meet strict QA and company standards.
  • Financial Governance: Assist in the general preparation and management of operational (OPEX) and capital (CAPEX) budgets, ensuring adherence to corporate Procurement, Financial, and Quality policies.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify and support the implementation of energy, carbon emission reduction, and continuous improvement projects, sharing cross-site and divisional best practices.

ABOUT YOU

  • Technical Background: A strong, proven background within Mechanical Building Services Engineering with deep knowledge of HVAC, ventilation, and complex mechanical drainage systems.
  • Contract Management Experience: Robust experience managing major outsourced subcontractors (ideally tier-one providers like CBRE), with the ability to address and rectify any non-compliance with policies, practices, or procedures.
  • Strong Legislation & H&S Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of current UK legislation including CDM regulations, management of legionella (L8 ACoP), PSSR, and general health & safety frameworks.
  • Commercial Acumen: Ability to technically evaluate and assess supplier proposals, manage asset lifecycles, and ensure the business is achieving maximum value for money.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Demonstrate stakeholder management skills, with the ability to act as a UK & Transnational representative within your specific scope of expertise.

Required (Essential) Skills & Qualifications

  • Technical & Regulatory Expertise: Mechanical Engineering Foundation: A strong technical background with a relevant qualification (e.g., NVQ L3, HNC, or equivalent experience) related to Mechanical Facilities/Building Services Engineering.
  • HVAC & Building Services: Hands-on technical knowledge of complex HVAC, ventilation, and mechanical drainage/welfare facilities.
  • Statutory Compliance & Legislation: Direct experience navigating and ensuring compliance with UK regulations, for example: PSSR (Pressure Systems Safety Regulations), Legionella Control / Water Management (L8 ACoP), CDM Regulations (Construction Design and Management).
  • BMS & Control Systems: Practical experience using and interfacing with Building Management Systems (BMS) to track, troubleshoot, and optimise plant performance.
  • Safe Systems of Work: Solid understanding of Permit to Work systems (e.g., Confined Spaces, Hot Works) and managing Impairment Notices.
  • Subcontractor & Commercial Management: Tier-1 Supplier Governance: Proven track record of managing and driving performance from major outsourced Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) partners, holding them accountable to strict KPIs and SLAs.
  • Commercial Acumen: The ability to technically evaluate supplier quotes, review scope variations, and ensure value for money on maintenance and minor works.
  • Budget Support: Experience assisting with the preparation, forecasting, and tracking of operational (OPEX) and capital (CAPEX) budgets.

Desirable (Optional) Skills & Qualifications

  • Health & Safety Certification: A recognised safety qualification, such as NEBOSH General Certificate or IOSH Managing Safely.
  • Sustainability & Energy Management: Experience identifying and implementing carbon reduction, energy efficiency, or sustainability initiatives.
  • Professional Membership: Registration or membership with an engineering body such as CIBSE, IMechE, or IWFM.
  • Transnational Experience: Experience working across multi-site networks or collaborating within broader European/international corporate engineering standards.
