Overview

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer you will lead the development of helicopter customisations from concept to manufacture. You will own the technical quality of designs and mentor a small team, ensuring compliance with customer, regulatory and certification requirements. The role focuses on translating concepts into robust mechanical designs and integrating systems into Airbus Helicopters products. You’ll work across design reviews and NPI processes to deliver on-time, compliant solutions with impact on performance and safety. This is a hands-on opportunity to shape innovative helicopter solutions in a collaborative, cross-functional environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and structure new product designs in PLM and manage product maturity
  • Lead design efforts for work packages and supervise a team of design engineers
  • Check 2D/3D models and EBoMs for technical accuracy before release
  • Design and detail model various systems to meet customer, regulatory and OEM requirements
  • Monitor cost and weight targets and manage design changes for manufacturing and certification
  • Coordinate design reviews and ensure follow-up actions
  • Ensure appropriate material/process selection aligned with standards
  • Integrate modules into the overall product and coach junior engineers
  • Aim for design signatory status/Compliance Verification Engineer status
  • Assist in recruiting team members when required

Key requirements

  • Ability to plan and schedule design activities across multiple packages
  • Knowledge of tolerances and manufacturing processes
  • Experience with sheet metal fabrication, plastic vacuum forming, CNC machining and composite lay-up
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and specifications
  • Proven experience supervising mechanical design engineers
  • Degree in Mechanical/Aerospace/Structural Engineering or equivalent
  • Proficiency with CATIA V5, AutoCAD and PLM systems (Enovia SmarTeam, ARAS)
  • Understanding of CAA Part 21, CS27/CS29 and Defence Standard 00-970
