Responsibilities
- Respond to any major occurrence of electrical breakdown, carry out prompt inspection, analyse the fault, repair and re‑commission affected plant and equipment to minimise loss of production.
- Support plants with maintenance according to the Plant Maintenance programme, ranging from routine maintenance to major overhaul, including work during maintenance shutdowns.
- When supervising contractors and/or Air Products staff, ensure that the work is adequately planned, implemented safely and with high effectiveness.
- Carry out plant modifications according to central design specifications; submit any self‑generated design changes for specialist engineer approval before implementation.
- For some projects generate scope, cost and obtain Expenditure Approval, then implement the work scope.
- Give advice and assistance to Plant Managers and their staff on maintenance matters, drawing when necessary, upon the technical resources and expertise of specialist engineers.
- In association with the Maintenance Systems group, review and update the technical content of the preventive maintenance procedures and recommend changes where improvements in safety, quality or economy may be effected.
Qualifications
- Familiarity with electrical equipment in the facilities served (induction and synchronous motors, protective relays, switchgear, starters, control systems, transformers, generators and distribution systems).
- Technical skills rank higher than supervisory skills in this position.
- Experience troubleshooting independently, with a deep understanding of the interrelation between electrical systems and process plant equipment.
- Ability to analyse problems and identify permanent solutions such as replacement, revision or redesign.
- Minimum requirements: completion of a formal electrical apprenticeship and a tertiary vocational qualification to minimum HNC (UK) or equivalent, supplemented by post‑apprenticeship experience in electrical distribution, equipment protection and controls.
- Ability to read electrical control drawings.
- High‑voltage and large‑motor experience is preferred.
- Proficiency in English, both spoken and written.
- Previous experience as an Electrical Field Engineer in an industrial gases operating environment is advantageous.
Work Hours & Flexibility
Field Engineers are expected to respond to operational requirements on a 24/7 basis and must be completely flexible and readily available. Field Engineers may be called out from a place of work or home to any facility in the UK or Ireland, potentially on very short notice in the event of a plant breakdown.
