Air Personnel are delighted to be working with a client base at Biggin Hill Airport for the role of Deputy Head of Safety & Compliance.
Role Purpose
The Deputy Head of Safety & Compliance plays a pivotal role in strengthening the organisation’s safety and compliance culture. Working closely with the Head of Safety & Compliance, this position helps to shape, develop and maintain an effective, forward-looking Safety Management System (SMS) and Compliance Monitoring function that not only meets regulatory requirements but consistently drives operational excellence. Acting as deputy in the absence of the Head of Safety & Compliance, the postholder provides trusted leadership, sound judgement and a commitment to continuous improvement across all safety and compliance activities.
Key Responsibilities – Safety Management
- Safety Leadership & Culture
- Support the proactive identification of hazards and the systematic assessment and management of risk.
- Monitor risk mitigations and corrective actions to ensure their timely and effective completion.
- Produce clear, meaningful reports that support leadership decision-making and drive safety improvement.
- Maintain accurate and current safety management documentation.
- Safety Assurance & Investigation
- Ensure safety training is available, relevant and of a high standard.
- Provide informed, credible advice on safety matters to staff and management.
- Support the management and follow-up of internal safety reports.
- Participate in investigations, contributing to root-cause analysis and lessons learned.
- Collate and share safety information from regulators, industry bodies and contracted organisations.
- Promote a positive, proactive safety culture throughout the company.
- Ensure safety reports are handled efficiently and appropriately.
- Support safety audits of third-party suppliers, communicating findings to relevant postholders.
- Regulatory Reporting & Safety Governance
- Facilitate the distribution of relevant safety information to all personnel.
- Prepare data packs, actions and minutes for safety meetings within Centrik.
- Support the maintenance and continuous improvement of safety interfaces.
Key Responsibilities – Compliance Monitoring
- Audit Leadership & Oversight
- Support the maintenance of the Internal Audit Plan in line with Integrated Management System requirements.
- Ensure internal audits are conducted effectively, consistently and in line with approved procedures.
- Ensure findings and observations are clearly categorised and supported by accurate evidence.
- Monitor responses to internal and external audit findings to ensure timely and effective closure.
- Compliance Governance & Improvement
- Produce accurate and insightful compliance performance reports.
- Maintain compliance documentation and provide expert advice to management.
- Monitor regulatory change and ensure updates are embedded into company procedures.
- Promote an engaged, proactive compliance culture across all departments.
- Regulatory Interfaces & Provider Management
- Support compliance monitoring audits of third-party organisations.
- Ensure relevant compliance information is communicated to personnel.
- Provide feedback on compliance performance to the Accountable Manager.
- Assist with the approval and ongoing oversight of external providers.
- Support the authorisation processes for Part CAMO, Part 145, Part 147 and Safety & Compliance personnel.
- Support external audits and help formulate credible, evidence-based action plans, including root-cause and preventative actions.
Role Requirements
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- The capability to act as Deputy Safety Manager and Deputy Compliance Monitoring Manager across all company approvals, ideally with experience in similar nominated roles.
- Strong understanding of Operational, Aircrew and Continuing Airworthiness regulations.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues at all levels, regulators, customers and external partners.
- Auditor training with a minimum of 2 years' experience in safety management and compliance monitoring (5+ years preferred).
- Desirable: experience with ISO standards, non-UK regulatory approvals, and/or Health & Safety qualifications.
- The ability to develop practical, balanced solutions that fulfil regulatory requirements while supporting commercial needs.
- Willingness to travel to company and third-party locations to fulfil the duties of the role.
