Action Research and Business Planning Framework for a New Operating Model, Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft
Introduction
Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft is seeking an experienced consultant or small consultancy to design a three-year action-research and business-planningprogrammethrough which the museumwilltesta number of hypothesesaimed at developing aradically different operating modelin orderfora sustainable future for the museum.
The Board are taking an ambitious and unconventional approach to developing the operating model and plan for the future so this work will include extensive consultation with a wide range of stakeholders at the outset to discuss, gather insight and develop buy-in for this approach. Following the consultation, the objective of this work is to create a structured programme to test a set of hypotheses, building on what the Board has created.
The programme may include, but is not limited to research; practical experimentation; consultation; programme / activity design and development: income stream development: benchmarking: case study development; and testing programme / activity through operation. The structured programme should also detail the evaluation criteria and suggest exit strategies as well as building in time for the inevitable adaptations, as results emerge.
Theprogrammemust be fullycostedand accompanied by aprogrammetimeline.
The resultingprogrammewill be used to raise and secure funding foritsimplementationover a period of three yearsand will lead to the development of the museum’s new operating model.
The consultant’s role is to design the programme, not to manage its implementation.
Context and emerging direction
Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft is an independent museum in the South Downs. Founded in 1985 and redeveloped in 2013, it explores the artists and craftspeople associated with Ditchling since 1900 while supporting contemporary makers. Its accredited collection includes work by Eric Gill, Edward Johnston, David Jones, EthelMairetand Hilary Pepler.
The museum istemporarilyclosedin order togive the Board the space and time toredesign thenewoperational model;minimisingrisk andmaximisingspace for innovation,whilst becoming morerelevantandincreasingpublic impact.
The Board has developed a draft strategy, including a refreshed purpose, lessons from the previous model and a series of hypotheses. This work creates the programme to test our hypotheses and create increasedorganisational resilience and community impact. The draft documents will be shared with shortlisted applicants.
