Who are we? Cohere is the leading security-first enterprise AI company. We build cutting‑edge foundation AI models and end‑to‑end products that are designed to solve real‑world business problems. We’re training and deploying frontier models for enterprises who are building AI systems. We believe that our work is instrumental to the widespread adoption of AI and we are looking for folks that want to be part of that. We obsess over what we build. Each one of us is responsible for contributing to increasing the capabilities of our models and the value they drive for our customers. Cohere is a team of researchers, engineers, designers, and more, who are all passionate about their craft. We are a global technology company co‑headquartered in Toronto and San Francisco, with key offices in London, New York City, Montreal, Seoul, Germany and Paris. Join us!
Why this role? North is Cohere's cutting‑edge AI workspace platform, designed to revolutionize the way enterprises utilize AI. It offers a secure and customizable environment, allowing companies to deploy AI while maintaining control over sensitive data. North integrates seamlessly with existing workflows, providing a trusted platform that connects AI agents with workplace tools and applications. The Agents & Automations team builds the platform inside North that lets customers create AI‑powered workflows. Some of these workflows are structured automations, such as routing requests, keeping systems up‑to‑date, or triggering approvals. Others are more flexible agents that can gather context, use tools, make decisions, and take action across enterprise systems.
As an engineer on this team, you will help build the core platform that makes this possible: the workflow builder, execution engine, integrations, debugging tools, observability, evaluation systems, and feedback loops that help customers understand and improve what they deploy. This is broad product engineering work across frontend, backend, and AI‑powered systems. The goal is to ship reliable software that helps customers augment or automate real business workflows with agents and automations they can trust.
As a Software Engineer, Agents & Automations, you will:
- Design, build, ship, and maintain core capabilities for North’s Agents & Automations platform.
- Build product and platform features that help users create, run, debug, evaluate, and improve agents and automations.
- Own features end‑to‑end, from technical design through implementation, testing, launch, and iteration.
- Work across the stack, from frontend product surfaces to backend systems, depending on what the product needs.
- Make practical technical decisions that balance speed, quality, depth, and user impact.
- Collaborate closely with product, design, modelling, customer‑facing teams, and other engineers to define the right outcomes and ship measurable improvements.
- Use AI actively in your work, while staying intellectually engaged and accountable for the quality and reliability of what you ship.
Example problems you might work on include helping users turn natural‑language intent into a working automation, adding richer analytics for deployed agents, creating better debugging tools for failed runs, or designing workflow primitives that make complex enterprise automations easier to build.
You may be a good fit if:
- You have built, shipped, and operated production software used by real users or customers.
- You are comfortable working across backend, frontend, product, data, and infrastructure boundaries.
- You have strong product judgment, pay attention to product details and care deeply about whether your work helps the end user.
- You bring high agency: you act, tinker, learn quickly, and drive change without waiting for perfect instructions.
- You move quickly while maintaining a high bar for correctness, maintainability, and user impact.
- You communicate clearly, document important decisions, and collaborate well across functions.
- You can advocate for a point of view, change your mind when the evidence changes, and commit once a decision is made.
- You are excited to use AI to do your best work, while staying accountable for the systems you build.
Our stack includes Python, TypeScript with React, Postgres, and Kubernetes. We care more about strong fundamentals, product judgment, agency, and learning ability than prior experience with every part of the stack. If this role sounds exciting, but your experience does not match every bullet, we still encourage you to apply. We value and celebrate diversity and strive to create an inclusive work environment for all. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are committed to providing equal opportunities. Should you require any accommodations during the recruitment process, please submit a Accommodations Request Form, and we will work together to meet your needs.
