Reporting To: Head of R&D

Aibuild is seeking a hands-on Additive Manufacturing Engineer to join our R&D team in East London, where you’ll be working at the cutting edge of Large Format Additive Manufacturing (LFAM) research. In this role, you’ll work directly with industrial KUKA robots in our lab – operating them, running 3D prints, integrating end-effectors, performing calibration, maintaining system reliability, and troubleshooting hardware issues. You’ll also contribute to research and development work, running experimental builds and helping define new capabilities for our software platform to advance automated manufacturing. This position suits a proactive engineer who enjoys experimentation, working with hardware, and operating in a fast-paced R&D environment. If you thrive in a workshop, enjoy solving technical challenges, and want to help push the boundaries of additive manufacturing – we’d like to hear from you.

Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of hardware in the lab – deploying, maintaining, and troubleshooting industrial systems, including operating and calibrating KUKA robots and installing sensors, wiring, end-effectors, and automation components.
  • Design and execute experimental 3D prints, analyse results, and share insights to improve process stability and output quality.
  • Use Aibuild’s software platform for testing, debugging, and validating features.
  • Prototype and iterate mechanical and electronic hardware using CAD and workshop fabrication tools.
  • Keep our workshop running smoothly by sourcing components and managing tools, equipment, and spares.
  • Ensure lab safety compliance and uphold best practices for operating and handling equipment and materials.

Must Have:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Hands-on experience assembling and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems, operating tools and machinery, and interpreting technical documentation.
  • Understanding of additive manufacturing processes and materials science.
  • Strong CAD skills (Fusion 360, Rhino, SolidWorks, or similar).
  • Experience operating and maintaining 6-axis industrial robots.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to safely lift and position hardware or equipment when required.

Nice to Have:

  • Direct experience with KUKA robots and KRL programming.
  • Programming experience (Python preferred) and comfortable using AI coding tools such as Cursor / Claude code.
  • Familiarity with Linux environments (NVIDIA Jetson experience a bonus).
  • Experience integrating cameras, sensors, or vision systems.
  • Background in R&D experimentation and reporting.

Application:

Please send your CV, cover letter, and a portfolio demonstrating relevant hands-on hardware experience, problem-solving ability, and any experience in additive manufacturing or robotics.
