What will you be doing?
GIS Specialist Role Description: The Africa Health Organisation (AHO) will celebrate its 25th anniversary on 14 August 2025. We seek Geographical Information Systems (GIS) volunteers to join us in celebrating our Silver Jubilee by capturing and analysing health and socioeconomic geographical data using GIS systems to help AHO make long-term plans. We are looking for multi-skilled candidates with a quantitative background for roles such as GIS Analysts, Programmers, Technicians, Cartographers, Surveyors, Remote Sensing Specialists, Planners, Developers, Environmental Scientists, Geospatial Analysts, GIS Civil Engineers, Geographers, Spatial Data Scientists, Geospatial Technicians, GIS Software Engineers, GIS Researchers, and Scientists. These specialists are responsible for discovering patterns and trends through spatial mapping and developing mapping applications.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Work on health projects, scoping out the nature and purpose of the information required by AHO.
- Collect health data from various sources to populate geographical databases, including famine and hunger maps across Africa, disease, pandemic, epidemic, and humanitarian mapping.
- Collect, store, analyse, and present geographical and spatial health information.
- Analyse spatial data using mapping software.
- Discover patterns and trends through spatial mapping of data.
- Design digital maps with geographic data and other data sources.
- Produce maps showing the spatial distribution of health data, including health statistics and humanitarian locations.
- Develop mapping applications and tools.
- Convert physical maps into digital form for computer usage.
- Perform data munging and cleaning to convert data into desired formats.
- Produce reports on geographic data utilizing data visualizations.
- Manage a digital library of geographic maps in various file types.
