What are we looking for?
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
- A degree in Journalism, Media Studies, Social Media, or a related field such as health, development, SDGs, aid, sports, fashion, or broadcasting, along with English or a similar subject.
- A postgraduate qualification in journalism or broadcast journalism is an advantage.
- A Diploma or National Qualification in Journalism is welcome.
- Professional accreditations from organizations like NCTJ or Broadcast Journalism Training Council are beneficial.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- A keen interest in news, current affairs, health, business, and people.
- Excellent spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Good organizational skills and ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines.
- Ability to understand complex issues quickly and explain them simply and concisely.
- Resilience, determination, flexibility, persistence, motivation, and integrity.
Work Experience:
- At least three years of relevant work experience with a professional portfolio of published work.
- Experience writing articles and reviews for various publications, especially with a byline.
- Participation in student newspapers or similar platforms is a plus.
Languages:
Proficiency in one of Africa\’s widely spoken languages (e.g., Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba, Arabic, French, etc.) is an advantage but not mandatory.
What will you be doing?
The Africa Health Organisation (AHO) celebrates its 25th anniversary on 14 August 2025. We seek inspiring and dedicated freelance journalists to join us in celebrating our Silver Jubilee by creating content on health, medical issues, and the socioeconomic determinants of health in Africa and the Diaspora.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Research and publish stories related to health in Africa.
- Interview individuals across various health-related contexts.
- Cover health events, meetings, and community projects.
- React to breaking health news and breakthroughs.
- Create concise, accurate copy under strict deadlines.
- Produce shorter stories and longer feature articles.
- Upload and manage news content on our website, including live reporting and blogging.
- Interview stakeholders, including politicians, health professionals, and community members.
