We have an exciting opportunity at Glasgow Airport for a Building & Civil Engineering Technician to join our Engineering team. The role will be based at Glasgow Airport.

Job Description
The role requires a high level of skill and experience in all types of building and civil engineering works and maintenance. This will include safe excavation works for utility systems including HV & LV electrical cables, gas installations, mains water, fire mains supplies, sewage and surface drainage. It also includes small scale building construction works, including drainage, access ramps, safety barriers, new mains water & fire mains water installations, sewage systems etc. Experience of pavement repairs, highway road repairs and pedestrian footpath repairs is essential to the role including repairs to asphalt surfaces, pavement quality concrete and Monoblock surfaces. This will also include the setting up of exclusion zones and traffic management systems. Maintenance activities include interceptors, bunds, waste systems including unblocking internal and external drainage and sewage systems, inspection of sewage pumps/pipework, clearance of surface water drains. The role is physically demanding and requires a good level of physical fitness. It is mainly based outdoors with works being required in all weather conditions. The role holder would be expected to be part of the winter snow clearance team and pass a confined space medical for working in designated confined spaces.
Principle accountabilities
- Airfield Pavement & Highway Road Maintenance
- Airfield pavement asphalt repairs
- Pavement Quality Concrete repairs (Portland Cement)
- Over banding and pavement joint repairs
- Maintenance of the highway roads owned by the airport.
- Undertake repairs to pedestrian footpaths including asphalt, paved, tiles and slabbed.
- Maintain roads, drains and pathways around the airport campus.
- Effective set up of road traffic management systems
- Repair potholes and surface defects on airport owned highways.
- Maintenance and cleaning of road signs and street furniture.
- Maintain roadside verges and central reservations.
- Paint road markings ensuring signs are in all areas.
- Able to operate hand tools such as picks and shovels, drills, stilsaws and breakers.
- Laying pavements, pathways, and kerbs
- Trimming trees and grass in central reservation areas
- Spreading grit and salt in winter conditions
- Clearance of snow in winter conditions.
- Safe Utility Excavation Works
- Safe setup of excavation site including perimeter fencing
- Competent use of Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT Scanners)
- Safe operation of 360-degree diggers and dumper trucks
- Ability to safely hand dig in the vicinity of live and isolated utilities.
- Reconstruction of site following utility repairs including sand fill, gravel fill, type 1 and asphalt.
- Operate asphalt road rollers and road sweeper vehicle plant.
- Building & Construction Works
- Effective set up of demolition and construction site including perimeter protection.
- Undertake down-takings and strip out of existing site.
- Quantify Bill of materials required for reconstruction.
- Construct trenches for laying of cables and pipes for all utilities HV Cables, LV Cables, Potable water supply, gas pipes, drainage systems and sewage.
- Buildings & Estate General Maintenance
- General site duties and safety
- Interceptor maintenance including inspection and sludge removal.
- Drain maintenance including inspection and jetting works.
- Bund maintenance including inspection emptying and leak repairs.
- Tank maintenance and inspection.
- Gutter inspection and maintenance for all buildings across the campus.
Qualifications and experience
- Knowledge of building and construction including basic engineering methods and principles
- Experience with mixing and pouring construction materials, including tarmac, gravel and crushed stone, mortar, concrete and grout.
- Ability to operate construction equipment such as drills, jackhammers and trench rammers, disk cutters.
- Competent use of hand tools, such as picks and shovels, using hand tools such as drills, saws and breakers.
- Exceptional hand-eye coordination and balance
- Physical strength and stamina to complete physically demanding work outdoors for long hours.
- Basic maths skills to take accurate measurements while mixing materials on job sites.
- Ability to work as part of a team and follow instructions.
- Be resilient to various weather conditions.
- Be able to work as part of a construction team.
- Be enthusiastic and hard-working.
