We have exciting opportunities at Glasgow Airport Limited for Airside Operations Officers to join our Airside Operations team. This is a permanent, full time role and will be based at Glasgow Airport.

Job Description

To ensure on a day to day basis a safe environment for the ground operation of aircraft and vehicles. To carry out on a 24 hour basis those functions required to maintain a high level of airfield and apron safety complying with statutory requirements, and local management instructions. In addition, to deliver high standards of customer service to internal and external customers and business partners by providing an efficient stand allocation and flight and airfield information services.

Principle Accountabilities

Operational

  • Ensure that safety is given the highest priority at all times in meeting operational standards through inspection and audit, ensuring that fault reporting and follow-up actions are recorded.
  • Carry out regular safety inspections of the airfield (runways, taxiways, grass areas, and aprons) ensuring that all hazards to aircraft operation or personnel are identified, recorded and acted upon as necessary.
  • Check the serviceability of lighting systems both on and off the airfield and report any off airfield hazards to aircraft such as cranes, or other obstructions.
  • Carry out regular bird patrols and disperse if necessary using an appropriate method. Record an accurate log of species observed, their location and dispersal technique used.
  • Monitor bird and wildlife activity both on and off airfield and record any trends or changes to patterns.
  • Participate in wildlife and bird culling activities when necessary.
  • Provide marshalling assistance and safety escorts to aircraft and vehicles as required and as directed, assist with additional safety related functions relating to the safe operation of the airfield.
  • Take a leading role at the Rendezvous Point (RVP) in ensuring the efficient and safe passage of the external emergency services to the incident site.
  • Be familiar with the appropriate sections of the Emergency Orders and in particular the responsibilities of your role in an emergency situation.
  • Play a key role in the implementation of low visibility procedures and associated safeguarding processes including deployment of barriers and switching of hold points as per departmental instructions.
  • Manage and operate electronic stand planning and coaching systems and other operational systems using information obtained from ATC, airlines, handling agents, and other business partners and external customers and amend/reallocate stands as necessary on a real time basis responding to changing operational and customer needs and priorities.
  • Disseminate relevant information to internal and external customers as required.
  • Monitor and manage the conduct and safety of all contractors and engineers working airside, carry out site hand over inspections and ensure that all relevant safety documentation and permits are in order.
  • Ensure that all personnel working airside comply with statutory instructions and local airport notices and take appropriate action to maintain high standards of safety airside and minimise the environmental impact of airside operations primarily by monitoring standards of vehicle maintenance and through the prudent use of anti-icing chemicals.
  • Promote close liaison with internal and external customers and business partners to foster co-operation in all areas, particularly with regard to airfield safety.
  • Ensure that the Unit delivers a customer focused and professional service and listens and understands customers concerns and motives.
  • Disseminate important information regarding the operational status of the airfield and other safety advice to a wide range of customers and business partners.
  • Assist in analysis of delays providing information to aid in improvement in process and give feedback to the customer where requested.
  • During winter operation conditions provide assistance to the Snow Co-ordinator and undertake other key roles as required to maintain safety and return the airfield as quickly as possible to a fully operational condition.
  • Monitor pavement conditions including stands, disseminating the results to ATC and the Airfield Operations Unit.
  • Supervise the snow clearance and de-icing/anti-icing operations in an efficient and effective manner when instructed to do so.
  • Act as a member of the winter operations roster either in an Officer capacity or equipment operator as required.
  • Develop solutions to issues raised with due regard to safety and other operational and environmental constraints.
  • Monitor the activities of all airside operators and, in accordance with local safety procedures, investigate all incidents and accidents airside and when directed produce a written report containing recommendations.
  • Communicate effectively at all levels both orally and in writing.
  • Be a highly motivated individual able to play an active role in the change management process and work effectively under pressure often without direct supervision.

Any Other Duties

  • Participate in projects and working parties and to carry out any other duties that may be outside the standard remit for the purpose of personal development, or as may be reasonably required by the Company.
  • Should the consequence arise, you may be required to assist the ASU team to carry out the following duties:
  • Coach Driving
  • Operating all anti / de-icing equipment
  • Operate equipment to facilitate clearing / cleaning of spillages

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Previous safety experience, ideally with a working knowledge of Safety Management, Risk Assessments and Business Continuity.
  • Previous experience of working in a customer focused role, ideally involving some form of project/process improvement experience, would be a distinct advantage along with the ability to discuss often contentious incidents with third parties and internal customers with an appropriate level of diplomacy and tact.
  • The ability to communicate clearly at all levels of the organisation and with external organisations both orally and in writing with confidence and diplomacy.
  • A working knowledge of the statutory and airport operational documents with the ability to make decisions often under pressure and unassisted based upon interpretation of the relevant manuals.
  • IT literate, with proficient use of Microsoft Office suite.

Special Requirements

  • Ability to obtain suitable security clearance to satisfy Civil & Military requirements, CRC & GSAT clearance required for airside pass.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Firearms Certificate.
  • Ability to meet Glasgow Airport driver medical standards and attain a full GLA manoeuvring area driving permit.
