An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Assistant Hatchery Manager to join a modern hatchery operation in Wrexham. This role would suit an individual with poultry, hatchery or livestock production experience who is looking to take the next step in their career. Working closely with the Hatchery Manager, you will play a key role in the day‑to‑day management of the hatchery, ensuring the efficient, safe and compliant operation of the facility while maintaining the highest standards of chick quality, animal welfare, hygiene and biosecurity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the management of all core hatchery operations, including egg intake, incubation, hatching, chick handling and dispatch.
  • Lead, supervise and train hatchery staff, ensuring adherence to company procedures and operational standards.
  • Assist with workforce planning, daily task allocation and performance monitoring.
  • Coordinate egg and chick transport activities, liaising with drivers and ensuring vehicle checks and maintenance schedules are completed.
  • Monitor and enforce strict hygiene, biosecurity and health & safety standards throughout the hatchery.
  • Support the maintenance, servicing and fault‑finding of hatchery equipment, including incubators, hatchers and associated systems.
  • Maintain accurate production, quality and performance records and support internal and external audits.
  • Respond promptly to operational issues and participate in alarm rota or out‑of‑hours cover when required.
  • Deputise for the Hatchery Manager during periods of absence.

The Candidate

  • Previous experience within a hatchery, poultry, livestock or agricultural production environment.
  • Proven supervisory, team leader or people management experience within a production, agricultural or manufacturing setting.
  • Strong organisational, communication and problem‑solving skills.
  • Good computer literacy, including Microsoft Excel, data entry and record management.
  • Ability to work independently, use initiative and support a wider management team.
  • Knowledge of biosecurity procedures, hygiene standards and quality systems.
  • Basic mechanical or technical aptitude with the ability to support equipment maintenance activities.
  • Relevant qualification in Agriculture, Animal Science or a related discipline desirable.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Flexible approach to working hours, including weekends when required to support business needs.
  • Due to strict biosecurity requirements, candidates must have no involvement with domestic poultry, cage birds or other bird species outside of their employment.

The Package

Salary from £36,000 per annum DOE. Permanent, full time position.

Candidate Requirements

All applicants must hold a minimum of an NVQ Level 2, Scottish NVQ Level 2, or an equivalent qualification relevant to the role applied for. Candidates must also have the legal right to work in the UK or hold a valid visa permitting employment.
