The Job Role: An excellent opportunity has arisen for a dedicated and enthusiastic Calf Rearer to join a progressive dairy farming business. This role is responsible for the day-to-day care, health and development of youngstock, ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare are maintained from birth through to weaning. You will also be required to get involved in other areas of the dairy farm when needed. The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for livestock, excellent attention to detail, and a proactive approach to calf health and husbandry.
Location: Cheshire.
Salary Package: Paying £12.71 - £15 Per Hour Depending on Experience. Full training and development opportunities. Excellent opportunity to work in a large, progressive dairy business. Accommodation may be available for suitable candidates.
Working Hours: Daytime 5am start.
Key Responsibilities:
- Providing daily care and management of newborn calves and youngstock.
- Feeding calves in accordance with farm protocols, including colostrum management, milk feeding and weaning programmes.
- Monitoring calf health and identifying signs of illness or disease at an early stage.
- Administering medicines and treatments in line with veterinary protocols.
- Assisting with calving and ensuring newborn calves receive the best possible start.
- Carrying out tagging, weighing, vaccinating and disbudding where required.
- Maintaining accurate health, treatment and performance records.
- Cleaning and disinfecting calf housing, feeding equipment and water systems to maintain excellent biosecurity.
- Bedding calves and ensuring accommodation is clean, dry and well ventilated.
- Monitoring growth rates and reporting any concerns to management.
- Assisting with movement of youngstock between age groups.
- Supporting general farm duties when required.
Candidate Requirements:
- Previous experience working with calves or youngstock within a dairy environment.
- Good understanding of calf health, nutrition and animal welfare.
- Confident recognising and responding to signs of illness.
- Experience administering medicines and maintaining treatment records.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Good organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Positive attitude and strong work ethic.
- Experience operating farm machinery is desirable but not essential.
