Agratas – Oxford, United Kingdom. Join Agratas, a Tata Group enterprise, to work as a Characterisation Scientist (X-ray Technique Specialist) focusing on Li-ion battery cell advanced characterisation. This hands-on role is based in Oxford and supports R&D efforts in developing and validating high-performance battery materials using XRD, XRF, and tomography.
Location: Oxford, UK. Function: Cell Technology / Advanced Characterisation. This role offers the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art tools, collaborate across internal and external partners, and help evolve Agratas\’ in-house analytical capabilities.
Responsibilities
- X-ray Characterisation: Lead the application of X-ray diffraction (XRD) to analyse Li-ion active materials and electrodes. Support XRF and X-ray tomography on components and small prototype cells.
- Sample Preparation & Analysis: Prepare solid and liquid samples for X-ray analysis. Conduct experiments, process data (e.g. using Highscore, GSAS), and generate actionable insights for R&D teams.
- Lab Operations & Equipment: Maintain and calibrate X-ray instruments. Ensure safety compliance, assist with Radiation Protection procedures, and support laboratory best practices.
- Collaboration & Insight Delivery: Work with electrochemists, scientists, and engineers to deliver meaningful interpretations that accelerate materials development. Build links with external partners and university facilities for access to novel techniques.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate experiment records, support method development, and contribute to internal knowledge sharing across R&D.
About You
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong hands-on experience in X-ray diffraction (XRD) for materials characterisation.
- Proficiency with XRD analysis software (e.g., Highscore, GSAS).
- Knowledge of X-ray safety procedures; Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) trained or equivalent preferred.
- Experience with XRF and sample preparation techniques.
- Excellent attention to detail, experimental rigour, and documentation practices.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills across technical disciplines.
Desirable Skills
- Familiarity with X-ray tomography, in-situ cell analysis, or small-cell characterisation.
- Experience with XAS and synchrotron techniques is a plus.
- Experience collaborating with external research facilities or universities for access to advanced characterisation.
Qualifications
- Degree (ideally PhD) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, or related discipline.
- Relevant experience applying X-ray techniques to battery materials or electrochemical systems.
