Could your next role combine leadership, commercial thinking and a genuine passion for military history? We’re looking for a hands-on and engaging D-Day Museum Manager to lead the day-to-day running of the museum and help us create an outstanding experience for our visitors. This is a varied role. One day you might be welcoming visitors and bringing the stories behind the collection to life, the next you could be organising the volunteer rota, supporting an event or looking at new ways to attract more people to the museum.
At the heart of the role is visitor experience. We want someone who will make sure every visitor receives a warm welcome, enjoys their time with us and leaves with a greater understanding of the people and events connected to D-Day and the Second World War. You’ll also lead and support our fantastic team of volunteers, creating a positive environment where people feel valued, involved and well supported. And importantly, we’re looking for someone with a commercial mindset. Someone who will think creatively about how we increase visitor numbers, develop events and activities and maximise opportunities to generate income.
Hours of Work
This role is offered on a zero-hours, pay-as-you-go basis, providing flexibility to meet the needs of the museum and its visitors. The museum is predominantly open at weekends, therefore occasional weekend working will form a regular part of the role. Working hours will vary depending on operational requirements, events, exhibitions and visitor demand. There may be periods where up to five days per week are available for those seeking additional hours, while applicants looking for fewer hours may also be considered. We would be particularly interested in hearing from individuals with complementary skills and experience.
What you’ll be doing
- Leading the day-to-day operation of the museum
- Creating a welcoming, engaging and memorable visitor experience
- Recruiting, supporting and supervising our volunteers and managing rotas
- Maintaining excellent standards across the museum
- Helping to grow visitor numbers and income
- Supporting events, exhibitions and fundraising activities
- Ensuring health & safety, safeguarding and operational procedures are followed
- Supporting the care and management of our collections
Who are we looking for?
You don’t necessarily need to have managed a museum before. We’re much more interested in finding someone who can lead people, take ownership, engage with visitors and commercially drive the museum forward. You may have a background in the Armed Forces, perhaps as an NCO or veteran looking for an opportunity to combine your leadership experience with an interest in military history. Equally, you might come from tourism, heritage, visitor attractions, hospitality, retail or another customer-focused environment. An interest in D-Day, the Second World War or military history would be a real advantage, alongside strong people skills, commercial awareness and a practical, hands-on approach. Above all, we’re looking for someone who will take real ownership of the museum, make visitors want to recommend it to others and help us share these important stories with an even wider audience.
