About The Role

We are seeking a talented Data Developer to join our dynamic data journalism team. In this role, you will be instrumental in transforming raw data into compelling, interactive stories that resonate with our audience across various digital platforms. You will be responsible for designing and building bespoke data visualizations, calculators, and interactive tools that enhance our storytelling capabilities. Additionally, you will play a key role in maintaining and developing our data infrastructure, including databases, pipelines, and web scrapers, to support large-scale projects such as Times Data. Working closely with senior editors and journalists, you will help craft innovative data-led investigations and features that set our journalism apart.

The ideal candidate will have a strong coding background coupled with a keen news instinct, enabling them to bring data stories from conception to publication while staying ahead of emerging trends in data and graphics journalism.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in building web-based data visualizations and interactive content.
  • Proficiency in front-end development technologies such as JavaScript, with experience using frameworks like React or Svelte.
  • Strong knowledge of visualization libraries such as D3.js, as well as mapping tools like QGIS, Mapbox, or Leaflet.
  • Experience with data analysis and manipulation using R or Python.
  • Familiarity with AI models and their application in data journalism projects.
  • Working knowledge of SQL, version control systems like Git, and database design or maintenance.
  • Excellent news judgment with a deep understanding of The Times and The Sunday Times' editorial standards and audience.
  • Ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop interactive visualizations, calculators, and data-driven stories that align with newsroom objectives and deadlines.
  • Assist in building and maintaining robust data infrastructure, including databases, pipelines, and web scrapers, to support ongoing and future projects.
  • Research, pitch, and produce data-led investigative stories, ensuring accuracy and clarity in presentation.
  • Stay informed of the latest developments in digital graphics, data visualization, and interactive journalism, and incorporate best practices into our work.
  • Collaborate with editors, journalists, and technical teams to translate complex datasets into engaging narratives and visuals.
  • Ensure data security, integrity, and compliance with organizational standards and best practices.
  • Contribute to team brainstorming sessions and workshops aimed at enhancing data journalism capabilities.
