About The Role

Join Companies House at a pivotal time as we undertake a significant digital transformation to enhance our services. As a Junior DevOps/WebOps Engineer within our Digital and Technology directorate, you will be instrumental in supporting the delivery of secure, resilient, and high‑performing IT services that underpin the UK company register. This role offers a unique opportunity to develop your technical skills in a supportive environment, contribute to WebOps practices, and ensure service reliability through monitoring, incident management, and problem‑solving. You will work closely with a diverse team of software engineers, analysts, and product teams in an agile setting, supporting both internal and customer‑facing services. Your contributions will directly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of our digital offerings, ensuring they remain available, secure, and continually improving to meet legislative and organisational priorities.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates with a strong desire to learn and grow within the DevOps/WebOps domain. Essential qualifications include familiarity with cloud‑based Unix/Linux environments, basic SQL querying skills, and exposure to automation and monitoring tools. Experience or knowledge of cloud infrastructure such as AWS or similar platforms, scripting languages like Shell, Python, or Java, and an understanding of DevOps principles are highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate good communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and an interest in system performance, security, and availability. A background in supporting live systems, incident response, and data management will be advantageous. We welcome applications from those with relevant technical experience, even if they are still developing their skills, provided they show enthusiasm and a proactive approach to learning.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting maintenance, upgrades, and continuous service improvements to ensure systems remain reliable and perform effectively.
  • Assisting in aligning services with evolving organisational and legislative priorities, including changes introduced through the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act.
  • Supporting live services through proactive monitoring and incident resolution to maintain high availability and performance standards.
  • Contributing to system upgrades, automation activities, and enhancements as your technical skills develop.
  • Supporting reporting and data management activities to inform service performance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Assisting with incident management through ServiceNow, contributing to issue resolution and root cause analysis.
  • Collaborating with cross‑functional teams to support digital service development, transformation initiatives, and process improvements.
  • Learning from experienced engineers and supporting team development and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Participating in an on‑call rota (where required) to support critical services, with appropriate training and support provided.
