Reporting to the hospital unit chief executive officer and accountable to the group chief nursing officer, the Director of Nursing is a core member of the unit’s leadership team. The role involves shaping a culture of continuous improvement, leading nursing and midwifery staff, and ensuring high standards of patient and midwifery care in partnership with the group director of midwifery. The Director will work strategically with the medical director to enhance patient experience, quality of care, and patient safety. The role also requires establishing effective systems to monitor and improve clinical, operational and financial performance of nursing and midwifery teams.

Main Duties

  • Deliver world-class care to service users, staff, colleagues, clients and patients, ensuring everyone at the Royal Free feels welcomed, confident, respected, and reassured.
  • Act as an effective, collaborative, dynamic member of the health unit executive team supporting the CEO to develop an inclusive, progressive culture centred on patient and people experience, financial sustainability, continuous quality improvement and the tripartite mission.
  • Provide innovative professional leadership to nurses within the health unit and wider trust, supporting the modernisation and improvement of services and ensuring compliance with statutory instruments, NMC, professional standards and local policies.
  • Deliver professional support and leadership to divisional directors of nursing/midwifery for divisions in the designated health unit.
  • Promote quality, innovation, productivity and prevention within the scope of work.
  • Create a culture of openness and transparency where staff can raise concerns and receive feedback.
  • Actively promote compassionate inclusive leadership.
  • Successfully lead transformations, including project delivery at a significant scale and close working with clinicians.

Qualifications

Essential Education & Professional Qualifications

  • Current NMC Registration.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent level experience.
  • Evidence of continuous personal and professional development.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Management qualification.

Experience

  • Significant senior nursing experience in an NHS acute trust.
  • Experience of increasing staff engagement.
  • Experience of leading transformational service change.
  • Experience of managing complex problems.
  • Successful achievement of projects of a significant scale, including close working with clinicians.

  • Demonstrable track record of successful delivery.
  • Strong understanding of, and responsiveness to, the complexities and dynamics of the NHS including the importance of clinical governance.
