A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a resilient Design Technician to join our independently owned electrical and mechanical design consultancy based within York city centre. You will be part of a forward thinking, innovative, collaborative team, working within the Rail Industry in the Distribution and Plant discipline.
You will interpret design remits for a range of electrical and mechanical / Distribution and Plant (D&P) discipline areas and utilise effective project engineering techniques to develop a design solution for a range of design stages (i.e. feasibility, outline design, and detailed design). You will support in the development of engineering solutions, adhering to applicable standards, including competent use of CAD/industry calculation software, and writing of technical design specification reports.
You will utilise your qualifications and experience to play a significant part in the Project Delivery Team, contributing to a range of innovative projects across the Company’s contract portfolio. Your keen eye for detail, analytical approach and communication skills will support you to ensure that the production of designs incorporating CAD drawings, calculations and documents adhere to Company procedures and budget.
Reporting to the Principal Engineer, you will be comfortable to work autonomously at times as well as within a team environment. The role is office based, and you will undertake surveys with our Design Engineers, gaining site experience. You will be provided training to allow you to work out in the field of the railway environment, at locations such as depots, signalling power supply points and railway stations.
You will be enrolled onto our IET accredited Professional Development Scheme, one of the best performing schemes in the UK, and work towards UK Spec EngTech level of professional registration. Key Responsibilities
- Adhere to Rail Industry design standards and work to the Company design procedure
- A keen eye for detail to review and understand Company proposal documentation
- Participate and engage in Company meetings
- Plan for the successful delivery of designs
- Understand project delivery programmes
- Assist in the development of designs using industry approved software including: CAD drawings, calculations, report writing for existing site and installation narratives, proposed works narratives.
- Assist in the development of Designers Risk Assessments
- Assist in detailed site surveys
- Identify customer requirements
- Have an awareness of the commercial and financial impact of design decisions
What we are looking for
Qualifications: BTEC/ National Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or equivalent. A Levels with A-C in Maths & Physics or equivalent. Professional Registration (IET/IMECHE): Working towards EngTech status.

Strong verbal, written and diagrammatical communication skills to liaise with colleagues, clients and contractors.
