We are delighted to be recruiting on behalf of our client for a motivated and proactive Team Leader to oversee their Transgenic Breeding Team within a busy Biological Resources Unit. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced leader with strong organisational and people management skills to oversee day-to-day breeding operations, coordinate workloads, maintain accurate records, and ensure the highest standards of animal care and regulatory compliance. Working closely with researchers and key stakeholders, you'll play a key role in supporting the delivery of cutting-edge research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the day-to-day operations of the Transgenic Breeding Team, providing guidance and making decisions to ensure the smooth running of the unit.
  • Coordinate team workloads and oversee daily activities, ensuring researcher requests are delivered efficiently and to a high standard.
  • Maintain accurate breeding and colony records, updating colony management systems and ensuring data integrity.
  • Carry out routine animal husbandry duties, including feeding, watering, cleaning, health monitoring, and welfare checks in line with best practice.
  • Work closely with researchers, licence holders, and the wider team to support the successful delivery of research programmes.
  • Promote high operational standards and contribute to the continuous improvement of processes and working practices.
  • Ensure compliance with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, University policies, and all relevant health, safety, and biosecurity procedures.
  • Participate in weekend, Bank Holiday, and occasional out-of-hours rotas as required.
  • Carry out humane culling where necessary and support all regulatory and welfare requirements.
  • Undertake any additional responsibilities required to support the effective operation of the Biological Resources Unit.

Essential Requirements

  • Current, previous, or equivalent Home Office Personal Licence (PIL A & B) holder.
  • Degree in Biological Sciences or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Previous experience training, mentoring, or supervising staff.
  • Experience planning and coordinating workloads to meet operational deadlines.
  • Extensive hands-on experience working with mouse models.
  • Strong leadership, organisational, and time management skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, particularly when maintaining records.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Working knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Strong team-working and communication skills.
  • Willingness to participate in weekend and Bank Holiday rotas as required.
