About the Role
Based: North Tyneside
21 hours per week
Salary: £27,367 – £30,067 (pro rata)
We are looking for a passionate and engaging Charity Fitness Instructor to deliver community-based strength and balance classes for older adults across North Tyneside. This role focuses on helping older people improve their health, mobility, and confidence, reducing the risk of falls while creating a fun, social, and supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging, safe, and inclusive strength and balance exercise sessions across a range of community venues
- Plan and adapt sessions to suit varying abilities, health conditions, and confidence levels of participants
- Carry out basic assessments (e.g. mobility, balance, and confidence) and monitor individual progress over time
- Maintain accurate attendance records and track participant outcomes to demonstrate impact
- Create a welcoming and supportive group environment that encourages social interaction and long-term participation
- Provide encouragement and motivation to help individuals improve their independence, strength, and confidence
- Identify when participants are ready to progress and signpost or refer them to appropriate activities or services
- Promote the programme locally, building relationships with partners and stakeholders to drive referrals
- Gather participant feedback and use insights to continuously improve the sessions
- Ensure all sessions are delivered in line with health & safety, safeguarding, and data protection requirements
- Act as a first point of contact for participants, offering support and signposting to wider services where appropriate
- Contribute to reporting by providing accurate data and feedback on programme performance
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and provide cover for sessions where required
Requirements:
Essential:
- Level 2/3 Fitness Qualification and membership of a recognised body (e.g. REPs or equivalent)
- Experience working with older adults or vulnerable groups
- Ability to deliver safe, structured physical activity sessions and adapt to different abilities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and engage participants
- Understanding of health conditions affecting older people and how to exercise safely
- Good organisational skills and ability to manage your own schedule and workload
- Knowledge of safeguarding, health & safety, and confidentiality requirements
- Empathy and a genuine commitment to improving the wellbeing and independence of older people
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
Desirable:
- First Aid qualification
- GP Exercise Referral or specialist clinical exercise qualification
- Experience working in the voluntary sector, NHS, public health, or social care
- Experience supporting or supervising volunteers or students
- Experience delivering community-based or group exercise programmes
- Knowledge of falls prevention programmes or strength & balance training
- Experience monitoring, evaluating, or reporting on programme outcomes
