We are actively recruiting freelancers who speak African languages to join our vibrant team of interpreters and translators.
About Us
Africa Languages and Beyond LTD is a disability-inclusive, culturally rooted language service provider that champions African languages and the communities that speak them. We are newly launched, but passionate about building a network of diverse, skilled, and committed interpreters and translators. We prioritise cultural accuracy, flexibility, and lived experience in our freelance talent.

We are currently looking to expand our pool of freelance interpreters and translators across a wide range of African languages. These include, but are not limited to: Amharic, Arabic (North African dialects), Akan/Twi, Bambara, Bemba, Berber/Tamazight, Chewa/Nyanja, Dinka, Ewe, Fula/Fulani (Pulaar, Fulfulde), Ga, Hausa, Igbo, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Krio, Lingala, Luganda, Luo, Malagasy, Mandinka, Mooré, Ndebele, Oromo, Shona, Sesotho, Setswana, Somali, Swahili, Tigrinya, Tshiluba, Wolof and Xhosa.
We also welcome expressions of interest from speakers of less widely spoken or endangered African languages and dialects not listed here.
We’re Especially Looking for People Who:
- Are fluent in both English and an African language (spoken and written)
- Have lived or cultural experience related to the language
- Can interpret in healthcare, education, social services, or legal settings
- Are ready to complete an Enhanced DBS check (we can support this)
Key Responsibilities
- Provide face-to-face, video, or telephone interpretation or written translation between English and your chosen African language
- Ensure the accurate and impartial delivery of meaning, tone, and cultural context
- Maintain strict client confidentiality and professional ethics
- Submit timesheets and reports promptly as per assignment terms
- Keep up-to-date records of availability and assignments
- Adhere to Data Protection (GDPR) and Safeguarding requirements
- Fluent in English and an African language
- Willing to apply for an Enhanced DBS (Child & Adult Workforce)
- Must have the right to work as self-employed in the UK
- Good communication, empathy, and professionalism
- Reliable internet access (for remote interpretation or translation)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to confidentiality and professional ethics
- Experience with community, healthcare, or legal interpreting
- Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting (or working towards it)
- Qualifications or evidence of literacy in both languages
- Ability to translate written documents to and from English
- Familiarity with digital platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or translation tools
- Cultural sensitivity and awareness
- Professionalism and discretion
- Adaptability and ability to work independently
- Time management and meeting deadlines
- A passion for language access and inclusion
