Reporting to the Next Day Planning Editor, the Simultaneous Translator is responsible for delivering accurate and fluent real-time translation of live news content from English (and other languages where possible) into Farsi. This role is critical to maintaining the immediacy, accuracy, and impact of our live news output for Farsi-speaking audiences. It requires excellent language skills, strong editorial judgement, and the ability to perform under pressure during live broadcasts.
Responsibilities
Provide high-quality simultaneous translation of live news events, interviews, press conferences, and breaking stories from English (and, where relevant, other languages) into Farsi.
Maintain accuracy, neutrality, and fluency in all live translations, reflecting the tone and context of the original content.
Work closely with the News Editor, Presenters, and Gallery team to ensure smooth and coherent delivery during live output.
Be fully across major international and regional stories to ensure contextual understanding during live translation.
Flag any editorial concerns or issues arising during translation to relevant editorial staff.
Continuously monitor language usage to ensure clarity, cultural appropriateness, and alignment with editorial guidelines.
Assist with preparing background material or translation briefs as needed for live coverage.
Uphold Volant Media’s editorial and compliance standards at all times.
Requirements
Proven experience as a simultaneous translator in a live broadcast or newsroom environment.
Native-level fluency in both spoken and written Farsi and English; additional language skills are an asset.
Strong understanding of Iranian, Afghan, and international current affairs.
Ability to think and respond quickly under live broadcast conditions.
Excellent editorial judgement and a clear grasp of accuracy, fairness, and impartiality in journalism.
Calm and focused under pressure, especially during breaking news coverage.
Familiarity with broadcast workflows and working alongside technical teams in a live environment.
Willingness to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays, as required.
