Project Description
The successful individual will support and work with the in-house project delivery team to provide works across several asset classes to include substations, underground cables, overhead lines and civils. This will cover at all system voltages from low voltage (LV) up to and including 132kV.
Role Overview
The Senior Authorized Protection Commissioning Engineer provides advanced commissioning and integration services for protection, control, and SCADA systems across all distribution asset classes. This role encompasses all aspects of project-based commissioning activities, ensuring new equipment and protection schemes are fully commissioned and integrated with existing systems, meeting regulatory and customer obligations.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake all duties required of a Protection Commissioning Engineer, including:
- Pre-commissioning inspections and off-load commissioning tests.
- Verification of detailed schematics against connection, protection, and tripping logic diagrams.
- Attend Factory Acceptance Testing and project meetings as required.
- Witness testing of primary substation plant (circuit breakers, switches/disconnectors, transformers, voltage and current transformers).
- Insulation resistance, primary and secondary injection tests.
- Circuit logic and relay logic tests.
- Protection relay checks (distance, feeder differential, transformer differential, frequency, G99, high impedance busbar, blocked busbar protection).
- Auto-reclose scheme, intertripping, and signalling equipment checks.
- Integration testing of protection systems with control and SCADA (DNP3, IEC61850).
- Testing and proving relay programmable logic and setting files.
- Fully commission new items of plant and protection, integrating them with existing systems.
- Hold relevant authorisations under Distribution Safety Rules to commission, operate, and maintain all protection systems up to and including 132kV.
- Perform operational switching relevant to the voltages being commissioned.
- Provide guidance and support to other members of the Protection Commissioning Team.
- Complete all work in line with company objectives (time, cost, quality) and provide accurate reports on progress and status.
- Use and update company data and information systems, including comprehensive commissioning records and fault/defect investigations.
- Undertake duties under the CDM Regulations as Designer and/or Contractor.
Qualifications
All qualifications and experience required for Protection Commissioning Engineer, including:
- Minimum Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Electrical Engineering.
- Proven working history in electricity distribution/transmission industry, typically with 10+ years experience.
- Detailed knowledge of protection on all distribution asset classes at all voltages up to and including 132kV.
- High level of professionalism and ability to work under pressure and to tight timescales.
- Strong preference for recent experience commissioning protection systems associated with generation connections.
- Must possess and be capable to maintain Senior Authorised Person authorisation, specifically:
- Commissioning, operations & maintenance of all protection systems up to and including 66kV.
- All operation on protection systems up to and including 132kV, including commissioning, testing, operational, and maintenance activities.
- Associated operational switching codes relevant to the voltages being commissioned.
Additional Information
Services are delivered across operational and non-operational sites within its geographical licence area. Principal office locations include Castleford, Hull, Hellaby, York, Stockton, Penshaw, and Shiremoor. Expenses for travel and accommodation incurred for company needs will be paid separately, subject to company allowances and contract terms. The allocation and mix of project work may vary and will be determined by company priorities. All work should be performed in strict accordance with company processes, procedures, and industry best practice.
