Omnia Projects, part of the Egis Group, are a UK-based engineering consultancy specialising in electricity Transmission and Distribution (T&D) providing engineering, project management and technical assurance.
The successful individual will support and work with the in-house project delivery team to provide works across several asset classes to include substations, underground cables, overhead lines and civils. This will cover at all system voltages from low voltage (LV) up to and including 132kV.
The Protection Applications Design Engineer supports project-based works and portfolios of projects, ensuring the design and integration of protection, control, and SCADA systems across all distribution asset classes (overhead lines, underground cables, substations, civil works, and work programmes). The role involves producing and reviewing technical designs, drawings, and specifications in line with national and company standards.
Key Responsibilities- Assess and utilise Company documentation, including project functional specifications.
- Work in accordance with Company and relevant business systems, processes, and procedures.
- Use and update Company data and information systems.
- Produce accurate and detailed Connections, Protection, and tripping logic diagrams.
- Specify appropriate Current and Voltage Transformers for all protection and metering schemes, referencing manufacturers specifications.
- Produce relay programmable logic files, relay setting files, and IEC61850 and DNP3 communication files.
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge and experience in using CAD software (MicroStation V8i and/or AutoCAD 2021) to produce Connection, Protection, and logic drawings.
- Apply national protection standards (ENATS, TPS, BEBS, Elexon Metering Standards) to all voltage levels.
- Review protection design specifications produced by independent connection providers.
- Specify appropriate relay panel hardware, multicore schedules, bus wiring, and multicore cable termination equipment.
- Provide project designs and documentation, including descriptions of non-standard schemes and detailed relay application notes.
- Undertake witness testing of protection and associated plant & equipment and attend Factory Acceptance Testing.
- Interface with customers and internal/external resources.
- Complete all designs to agreed programmes of work and deliver in line with project plans and priorities.
- Accurately record all time spent on projects and provide timely reports on progress and status.
- Attend project-specific meetings and maintain effective communication within the project team.
- Undertake duties under the CDM Regulations, on behalf of the Company, as Designer.
- Update Company asset recording and data systems.
- Provide guidance and support to other members of the Protection Application Design Team.
- Either possess or be capable of successfully obtaining and maintaining the Company Operational Authorisation requirement, at minimum: Authorisations to gain access to all operational substations unsupervised. Authorisations to supervise others who need to gain access to all operational substations.
- Preferably a degree in Electrical Engineering; minimum academic requirement is a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Electrical Engineering.
- Proven working history in the electricity distribution/transmission industry delivering protection applications designs, typically with 10+ years experience as a Protection Design Engineer.
- Skills, experience, and detailed knowledge of protection design for all distribution asset classes of switchgear, transformers, and feeders at all voltages up to and including 132kV.
- Ability to design several schemes simultaneously, manage time to achieve project deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
- High level of professionalism, able to work under pressure and to tight timescales.
- Strong preference for recent experience in the design of protection systems associated with generation connections, including integration with legacy protection and control systems.
- Willingness to travel between work locations, sites, and company/supplier offices.
- Current and valid UK driving licence.
- Services are delivered across operational and non-operational sites within its geographical licence area. Principal office locations include Castleford, Hull, Hellaby, York, Stockton, Penshaw, and Shiremoor.
- Expenses for travel and accommodation incurred for company needs will be paid separately, subject to company allowances and contract terms.
- The allocation and mix of project work may vary and will be determined by company priorities.
- All work should be performed in strict accordance with company processes, procedures, and industry best practice.
