The Electrical Supervisor is responsible for leading, coordinating, and supervising electrical installation, maintenance, inspection, and fault-finding activities across water and wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, network assets, and associated infrastructure. The role ensures that all electrical works are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with water industry regulations, statutory requirements, and company standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervision & Leadership
- Supervise a team of electricians, technicians, and contractors carrying out installation, maintenance, testing, and commissioning works.
- Plan and allocate daily tasks to ensure efficient workflow and resource utilisation.
- Monitor work quality, ensuring adherence to specifications, drawings, and method statements.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior staff.
- Electrical Maintenance & Installation
- Oversee maintenance of LV electrical systems, motor control centres (MCCs), pumps, panels, cabling systems, instrumentation, and control equipment.
- Supervise installation of new electrical equipment and plant upgrades in treatment works and network assets.
- Ensure planned preventive maintenance (PPM) is completed to schedule and reactive tasks are addressed promptly.
- Compliance, Safety & Quality
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with: BS7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), Water Industry Mechanical & Electrical Specifications (WIMES), Health & Safety at Work Act, Control of Electrical Energy (LOTO procedures), DSEAR / ATEX where applicable.
- Conduct risk assessments, method statements, toolbox talks, and safety briefings.
- Maintain accurate quality documentation including test certificates and commissioning records.
- Fault Diagnosis & Technical Problem-Solving
- Provide technical expertise in diagnosing electrical, control, and automation faults.
- Escalate complex issues and work with engineering teams, SCADA / ICA engineers, and OEMs to resolve problems.
- Perform root cause analysis following equipment failures.
- Construction & Project Support
- Supervise electrical works on capital and refurbishment projects.
- Ensure contractor compliance with specifications, safety standards, permits-to-work, and site rules.
- Assist with design reviews, installation checks, commissioning, and handover documentation.
- Asset & Documentation Management
- Ensure electrical drawings, schematics, and asset information are kept up to date.
- Record maintenance activities in the company’s asset management system (e.g., SAP, Maximo).
- Provide input for asset condition assessments and lifecycle planning.
Required Qualifications & Certifications
- NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or equivalent
- City & Guilds 2382 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations)
- City & Guilds 2391 (Inspection & Testing) or equivalent
- CSCS / ECS card
- SSSTS card
- Jib Gold card
- Water Hygiene / EUSR National Water Hygiene “Blue Card” (or ability to obtain)
- Full UK Driving Licence
Experience & Technical Skills
- Proven experience supervising electrical works in the water or utilities industry.
- Strong knowledge of water treatment assets: pumps, MCCs, chemical dosing equipment, blowers, screens, UV / ozone systems, etc.
- Familiarity with SCADA, PLCs, instrumentation, and control systems (ICA).
- Ability to read electrical drawings and interpret technical documentation.
- Experience managing contractors and ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations.
